What's the best way to clean exhaust tips?
What's the best way to clean exhaust tips?
In the attached picture I cleaned the exhaust tips with Simple Green and a soft scotch brite pad. It had little impact. My next direction is rubbing compound and a power cone. I'm trying to not scratch up the exhaust tips, but cleaning chemicals aren't getting it done. Any thoughts, or proven methods?

I use Nevr Dull on a regular basis and occasionally Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish, they work perfectly well and make a very quick job of exhaust tip cleaning.

I always clay first then I use Metal Polish 1 & 2 with a MF pad.
If the tips aren't real bad you can get by with just MP 2. https://adamspolishes.com/collection...metal-polish-1 https://adamspolishes.com/collection...metal-polish-2 |

I painted the inside of my tips three years ago and have never cleaned the inside since. They look today just as good as the pics I took in this thread three years ago:
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=471821 note: You will also notice I painted the muffler suitcase black as well. That made the shiny trash can look just disappear.

I've used soap and water (Adams Car Shampoo, Carpro Reset) and a low-pile walmart cheapo MF towel since day 1. Hydrophobic coatings and spray sealants really help a lot here. A quick shot of Magic Elixir* Quick Detailer has avoided any build up. Yours are to the point where a mother's powerball/cone and some aluminum polish is needed, but will brighten them up quick. * Carpro Ech20 : Carpro Reload : Distilled water in a ratio of 1:4:20. |

I use a cone pad for my cordless drill with a good polish. I used to use a metal polish but now use Carpro Essence instead then put some Reload on the inside and outsides of the tips. Clean them in between with the Ech20/Reload/distilled water quick detailer mixture.

I coated my tips, so usually do a rinseless or detail spray mist and wipe off. Customer cars get metal polish and steel wool (grade depends on condition, but always end with 0000).

After the car is done being washed, I'll normally grab an old MF towel and wash the tips off real good. Just car soap and water. Then I'll normally hit the outside of 'em with my dry tower/drying aid as the last thing before being done with drying. Been doing that for years and years. I'll use Never Dull a few times a year, but if you wash 'em regularly, it's really not needed.
Of course, this would all depend on how often you drive. Mine isn't a DD. -that being said I use the same technique on my DD GMC Sierra. I just don't wash the inside of the polished tips. I leave 'em black/dirty. |
