Budget Painting V6 Engine Cover

Dont have the cash to drop on a professionally painted engine cover but still want it to look like those awesome covers do (mostly)?

Not a professional painter yourself? This thread is for you.

Supplies you'll need:

1. Masking / painters tape.
2. Some paper
3. High temp spray paint of the colors of your chooosing
4. Patience.

Spray the entire thing the color that will be the most visible once completed. For me this was black. The first picture is what it looked like once completed. I had to let it cure fully before moving on to my next color. This time will be dependent on the particular paint you used.

Please note, normal rustoleum paint is not supposed to be exposed to temps of 200 degrees - so it may not be advisable to use as the engine cover paint.

The remaining pictures show the masking off for the silver paint and the final product. Remove the masking tape and such after about an hour of your last spraying.

Nice job, I paint myself too, but wanted this to be smooth gloss so i sprung for the river city cover. I then painted the airbox and fuse box.

I would add to this :

Scuff up the cover a bit with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. I found that the paint does not adhere that well to the cover

Well, it didn't come out as originally planned but I was able to save the piece. I had some red brake caliper paint left over so i covered my non-adhering paint with it. Not how i wanted but it looks cool. i will probably buy a new cover ($59) and really try to use the right paint and techniques and get it perfect. But I like this.

metallic paint on the bow tie (pic taken before I cleaned it all up)
