Mysterious dents in roof near sunroof

I bought this car for my wife with 18k miles on it last month from a Chevy dealer out of state. We looked it over from stem to stern prior to delivery and couldn't find anything wrong with it. After less than putting 1000 miles on it, we noticed three "soft" dents in the roof around the sunroof....front left, rear right and rear right between the sun roof and back glass. Only my wife and I have driven the car and neither of us has taken it past 3000 rpms or tried to launch it....love the look and sound but don't need to do all that. Point being, we have not torqued or stressed the body beyond normal city and commute driving.

We initially thought vandalism but it doesn't make any sense. After a quick internet search, it seems that this might be an issue with some domestic muscle cars.

I contacted the sales person at the dealership and he quickly gave me the customer service number for Chevrolet. Before I contact them, I want to see if anyone in forum land has (1) had this issue, (2) been able to get the manufacturer to take care of it and (3) if 2 happened what did you do to get it done?

Any help would be great!
Tim

the roof sheet metal isn't thick like on a 60's car or new truck.

I'm guessing they were there when you bought it and you just didn't notice it. You usually need to get at the right angles to see dents clearly.

GM won't pay a penny for this. Somehow it was damaged.

Pay a PDR guy to pull the dents. Maybe $100-$150.

Could you post some pics cause I have a sun roof on my 2014 and I would like to see where the dents are in yours. I have not seen any dents around the sunroof and my car is raced at the road course tracks, AutoX, drag strip, and the streets.

Thanks for the quick reply and paintless dent repair suggestion MD.

I'm certain the dents weren't there....I washed and dried the car after the first rain and would have seen them. I'm crazy about road tar, dings, scratches, etc. and feel sure I would have noticed them at the dealer, when we got it home or after the wash.

Trying not to to obsess about this too much. New car...stuff happens. If GM tells me to pound sand, I'll call my favorite body shop for a PDR referral.

I have a 4Runner with a golf ball exterior from hail....this doesn't look like it and it's isolated to three distinct locations.

Do you park anywhere where people would get up and walk around on top of the car? Sounds ridiculous but.... yeah.

That thought crossed my mind! The dealer tag and a new car can attract some crazies but I can't think of where it could have happened. My wife can see the car from her office window and never saw anyone near it. Of course, you can't watch every minute....grocery store, etc.

That's a manufacturing defect and should be covered under warranty.

Huh, before reading the post I would have guessed someone with a crowbar trying to get in, but it doesn't even look like that's the case with the pictures

That's what I'm thinking. No plausible scenario explains the damage.

Does anyone have an online source for GM/Chevrolet service bulletins, recalls, etc.? Just wondering if Chevrolet is aware of this issue.

For those thinking this is a manufactures defect...no way in hell. There are people all along the assembly line checking for deforms in the white body before it gets to paint. Then the inspection process really gets picky after paint. Not to mention the inspectors at the end of final assembly giving it one more once over before I heads out of the plant. Those are not small dents.
