Catch Can

Hey Guys,

I know this is like beating around a dead horse, but everyone I have talked to, (outside of here), has a different stance on this. I have a 2021 2SS 1LE, I picked it up used with 5,300 miles on it and I have about 6,700 miles on it now.

I know it's a proven fact a catch can does make for a cleaner engine... it absolutely does. With these LT1 engines, how bad have you seen these engines carbon up for people that DID NOT use a catch can? I know in my state of CA. it does cause the car to fail emissions and I have heard of cases where Chevy dealers will actually void warranties if they see a catch can in there.

Do you think it's really worth it for someone like me that probably won't track that often... maybe once or twice a year? I do lots of city and some highway driving. I've also heard catch cans seem to get dirtier and filled with more stuff in really humid climates, which being in Southern CA... it doesn't really get that humid here.

My basic question, I'll drive about 9-10k miles per year on this car, would you say a catch can is worth it for me? I probably won't need to get the car through emissions for 8 more years and it is certainly a car I want to keep for many years to come.

Thanks for your time and reading!

i have 32k miles on my 16 ss and i just added a catch can over the summer since i have been tracking the car more

well see if its really needed or not on my last car which was turbo and direct injected i never had one and when i went to replace my intercooler and piping the whole thing was backed up with oil so i think turbo/di definately but na with just some bolt ons probably not but since im tracking it more i decided it was time

I get 2 to 3 oz of oil in the catch can every 2,500 miles.

Mines a zl1 so a little different but when I took the supercharger off to have it ported there was quite a bit of oil residue even at 12k miles. Catch can has been added now so I'll see how it goes

Worst case scenario, it's $100 for peace of mind, best case scenario, $100 to prolong your engine life

I have a 2020 2SS Camaro street driven ... But I have a Heavy Foot ,, After a little research I bought the Elite Engineering E2 single exit port for my Car ... They did very well in the tests I saw reducing oil vapour going back to the engine .... every little bit going back into the engine is not a good thing in my mind ...... Tell you one thing Elite Engineering was a great company to deal with Emailed them what i was interested in getting and they were informative and very good to me .... Got it today they sent me The Catch Can with a couple of lengths of hose 2 different mounting brackets for diffferent options of locations 6 pack of O Rings and a couple of Quick Hose Disconnects for easy removal in case you have to take it to the dealer .... Great quality product inside was Aluminum Baffle system something to easily maintain cant wait to install it .....

My limited understanding is that catch cans only work when the pcv valve is open (not WOT), so tracking the car technically could make the catch can even less useful. Normal driving is when the can seems, in my mind at least, to actually be doing something more frequently. Ideally you get a clean and dirty side catch but that gets too pricey for me.

Don't know if this applies to everyone as I know different people get different amounts of oil from their catch cans, but I put the Mishimoto can on my car early on, but just connected to the dirty side and just get a 2-3 ounces of oil/gas/water with each oil change.

I recently removed the the air intake hose and "clean side" factory catch compartment(?) (little black plastic thingy) to access the throttle body. This was the first time I ever bothered to look inside there. I've got close to 18K miles on the car of mixed commute/sport/wildass, stupid and completely illegal driving and the clean side factory container was empty- nothing, clean indeed.

I think a catch can on the dirty side is worthwhile on these DI engines, but its my experience that a clean side hookup is not necessary, IMHO.
Keep in mind I'm talking about a normally aspirated car. If you're supercharged or turbo'd, I'd do both.
