Yeah I wouldn't want anyone to have a similar experience. When in doubt think of it this way, would you spray that same chemical on your paint and let it sit? If you're hesitant on saying yes, it's probably best you leave that off the wheels too just to be safe.

You’ll need a PH neutral wheel cleaner to get rid of the brake dust. I’m assuming you have brembo brakes? Yeah, those dust like crazy. I switched out my brembo pads for ceramic pads and now I just use my car shampoo to clean my wheels. I also use 3 brushes, a brush for the face, wheel woolie for the barrels, and a lug nut brush for the lug nuts.

I use Sonax wheel cleaner and it is extremely fantastic. Even after a couple of weeks road trip with a track day included, it took everything off without scrubbing at all.

I've always used an instant detailer on them.

With the cQuartz the dust just washes right off??
After the dealership replaced my wheels after the clearcoat started peeling off, they made me promise to just use car soap and water. I clayed them, CQuarzed them and then Hydro2'd them. Brake dust comes right off when using regular car soap and wheel woollies.

My car with the 1LE pads makes an INSANE amount of dust (now has ceramics on it) but I just would spray on suds with some Meguires soap, let it sit a minute and blast off.

I eventually would hand wash with a mitt, but everything comes right off.

Now on the rotors, hubs, calipers, etc... I have been using Griots wheel cleaner, no issues as all. Non acidic and is PH balanced

What other products work extremely well?
McKee's foaming wheel cleaner. I've tried at least 20 wheel cleaners. This one is by far the best. It smells pretty bad, that's the iron dissolving component.

I use Griot's Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner. Works just like Sonax but much cheaper.

I use Eagle One A to Z wheel cleaner. Bottle says it's safe for all types of wheel finishes. I use a soft brush to agitate the caked on Brembo brake dust and follow it up with a microfiber towel and a bucket of water. It's so effective at loosening brake dust, I imagine you wouldn't even have to use a brush if you rinse it off with any kind of pressure from a garden hose or pressure washer.

WOW! That is unfortunate. Apparently a bad batch of P21S, which incidentally I have used in the past without issue.

If you need something intense to clean really badly maintained wheels you can resort to Meguiars Wheel Brightener. It's pretty toxic but should be safe for wheels and works exceptionally well when something less extreme won't do the job. Read and follow the safety precautions.

Example photo from a bad batch of wheel cleaner:

Simple Green is quite terrible for Clear Coats, I would stop immediately. PH neutral wheel cleaners are going to be better for the finish on the wheels so that the above doesn't happen to you.

I personally use this, but also Sonax as mentioned before isn't a bad choice either:

As a wheel manufacturer who knows, please do not use simple green on your wheels, it will deteriorate the clear coat and over time ruin the finish.

I've been using Sonax for a long time. It makes cleaning my helo wheels easier. It breaks down the dirt and dust quickly.

Gents, not the OP but thought this might be a good place to pivot the conversation slightly towards prevention. Anyone have hands on experience with various coatings and specifically which seems to be the MOST effective at preventing buildup on wheels and/or are most effective at aiding cleaning with just a forceful spray of water (ie. rather than scrubbing and/or wheel cleaning chemicals).

Any of the coatings will do this. The easiest way to do it is to use a spray coating, which is in my signature… But because I had new wheels and had plenty of time, on my Honda HRV before I mounted the new wheels, I put two coats of cquartzUK ....they never get dirty.

This thread is gotten confusing because people are talking about how to clean them, then how to protect them, It is a two part process. First clean, then protection. Two different things; sonax is not a protectant, You'll see that in my link.
