Lucas Chevrolet in Lumberton NJ has a new leftover 13 ZL1 Coupe M6. Price is 56k but i am sure you can get it for a lot less.

ZL1's are also known to have blower issues. Whether they have been largely dealt with over the years, there are simply more failure points in a ZL1.
Don't use the above as a determining factor. The SC issue has been dealt with and now ALL SC units are covered to 120k miles by GM as a supplemental warranty to the rest of the car.

The ZL1 is built to take a pounding and keep going. There are guys here running huge HP and using stock internals and the stock transmission without issue (or it takes a long time to FINALLY have an issue). No question that GM overbuilt this car and we benefit from it.

For a toy car, a ZL1 is likely a better platform, but for something you'll drive regularly the new SS makes a lot more sense. A ZL1 will be a much deeper money pit over time. An SS is an outstanding daily driver. The ZL1...not so much.
What are more failure points on a ZL1? You say the ZL1 is not a good daily driver and you drive an SS. I have been daily driving my ZL1 for 3 and 1/2 years and is an outstanding DD, and fun too.

Its look like a better place to start...
Actually no, the ZL1 is a much better foundation, bombproof rearend, upgraded internals etc. Same old argument, putting a blower on an SS does not equate to a ZL1.

I have to say the ZL1 if I was in your position, since you say you plan on doing mods. As soon as you throw a mod on the 16 SS you are at risk losing the warranty..I would have got a ZL1 but it is not in my budget.

ZL1. I already see more 16 SS around than I have ever seen ZL1s. If you want a gen 6 wait for the next Z car. Everybody will have an SS

The SS sits higher, has less visability (no matter what the magazines say) and almost no back seat. The tires are smaller, the brakes are much smaller, and the presence of the car is infinitely smaller. The new SS is a very cute, quick car. It feels incredibly polished, and Euro. Makes me think BMW coupe. Its full of "neat" little amenities that may appeal to a daily driver. However, the ZL1 is the badass monster that your uncle always kept out in the shed with a tarp over it. It wreaks of muscle. Its obnoxious, its mean, its sexy. At the same time the mag ride and micro fiber suede take care of your ass on a long ride. If this is something you are truly considering than wait at least until the 1LE is on the market, because in the grand scheme of things the 16SS is going to be a dime a dozen and fairly forgettable compared to the ZL1. You would have to weigh in how long you plan on keeping the car. Just imagine owning a GT500, and then switching to the 15 GT when the body style changed. 1 year later there are 800 to 1 GTs on the road in comparisons to GT500s. 30 years from now when you walk out to your dream garage and pull a tarp off a car are you going to be showing your grandson just another SS, or are you going to show him the car that changed shit for the muscle car world...

Yep what he said. If you like all of the cool gadgets and want a fast fun little car, the 2016 SS might just be up your ally. If you want a muscle car that is truly a great all around car, I would go ZL1.

Any product with more horsepower and more moving parts are prone to more points of failure. The ZL1's motor has more failure points than the SS's motor. In addition, the entire driveline is subject to more stress. The ZL1 is a very well-made car for what it is, but context is everything. I see no indication anywhere the OP wants a track car, and no indication anywhere he wants to heavily mod the car.

There is no question that the standard SS is a more reliable and a more practical daily driver. In addition to the increased reliability, you get about 50% better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs and lower insurance rates. If the OP plans on putting significant mileage on the vehicle over time, the SS is probably the better play and more than enough for touring - the 2016 SS runs with the 2015 ZL1 stock-for-stock.

I said the SS is a better daily driver than a ZL1.

You make no sense, it may have more moving parts but those parts are so much stronger. They did over 800 hard launches on the ZL1s rearend, didn't break. I have never been stranded by my ZL1. It is extremely reliable proven by the amount of mods people have done to it. Where is your data saying an SS is more reliable, they are both Camaros and the ZL1 is built to a higher standard. Sorry but if I m buying a muscle car I am not concerned about fuel economy, maintenance costs and insurance.
