So in an effort to actually put down some power on the street, I needed to look at tires. The Goodyear Supercar 3 tires (305/30/30) were great around the occasional corner or off ramp, but couldn’t hold up to the Whipple’s angry onslaught (and not reasonable to expect they would). While the Smoothboost has helped street traction by ramping boost in better, I simply need more traction. I don’t want to run my drag pack on the street since I enjoy the occasional fast corner. With the Nitto NT555R2 on back order everywhere I looked, the Toyo R888R in 315/30/20 got the nod. They certainly look the part! Guess we’ll see how they do. So I had them mounted up and road-force balanced. I’ll take them out for a drive tomorrow and see how they do with some highway rolls.

Also have a dyno day scheduled with my tuner on July 11th, so we’ll see how we’re doing for power after Greg Kong worked his magic on my Whipple.

Well, I took them for a ride on Wednesday afternoon and gotta be honest, I didn’t hear them at all and I was surprised at the lack of noise for sure. But, I was just cruising in the 40-60 MPH range. I have the boost turned down on the street to only 7 pounds or so, so about 800 crank HP according to my airflow numbers. At that low boost level on a 70 degree day I was able to do a 30 MPH roll with no spin, so promising early results. I definitely came away impressed with their traction over the SC3 tires I had on previously. I’ll probably tweak up the boost a bit next time out…I have no need for “Full Kill” on the street but want to make sure I can dispatch any tough guys.

As I mentioned above, I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of howl! That said, I did have one quick burst at higher speed and there was definitely more noise, but my car is decidedly louder when I get on it anyway, so at first glance I’m not sure if it was normal car noises or the R888Rs. I guess what I’m saying is: I was really prepared for the worst case scenario, but haven’t seen on that on my admittedly limited one drive with them! I also have to wonder if you (Arpad) just got a crappy tire or two? Guess it’s a possibility.

Either my set was more noisy, or I think I'm just more averse to these high(er) pitched whines than most... I can't stand the Hellcat style supercharger whine either, for example, and am glad my Maggie has so little of it (at 10-11 psi at least).

Could be a little of both I guess. I’m definitely going to pay attention to them for the next couple of drives. Although I’ll probably be more focused on how much boost I can dial back in on the street.

Got a chance to get back to the dyno today for some pulls and tweaking of the tune. New best is 955 WHP with the Kong ported Whipple. The gods don’t want me to have 1K WHP.

Not bad at all! What did the boost do from the porting?

It doesn't fall-off on power hardly up top. That's nice! I hear the better the torque carries from peak is a good indicator, and it seems like the dyno is showing that blower's still making some steam up top. That's cool! Do you just have to spin in harder or are you about max'd?

Still looking great Josh!!!

Are those wheels 10" or 11"? I know they scream on a dyno, but I won't care/hear them much on the street. Do you still have about the same opinion on them after some more time with them?

I do that, too. I try to put tools on top of the radiator upper "bracket" mostly, but I start leaving tools on that steel eventually, so, like you, I'll leave a towel to keep from scratching. I don't like it's not exactly black for some reason. I don't know why I do that.

Looks like I picked up just about 1 psi of boost vs last year (15.7 vs 14.7).

Yeah it definitely carries it up top better! So I'm actually not spinning it any harder. I'm at 8.00/3.00 still. I had briefly tried a 2.65 upper last year but it drove my IATs high so I went back to 3.00. But the only change this year power-wise was the Kong porting.

Wheels are 11" (stock rear SS 1LE wheels). The tires aren't the quietest but I like the traction, especially at ~9-10 psi which is what I run on the street. I definitely still want to try NT555R2 still but I'll run these for now on the street.

Heading to the track this weekend so I'll mount up the drag pack soon. It'll be hot unfortunately so not sure I can do much better than my best previous time, but we'll try anyway.

Also, just for fun, my car was making EIGHTY horsepower *less* my first pull of the day…!?! I had run my car on the same dyno last summer and landed at 927. I then had a bunch of tune changes done chasing better drivability (which worked), but didn’t hit the dyno again after those tuning changes. But some of those changes had a big effect on power. SOI for example cost me 28 HP alone with NO other changes. Fixing the AFR and timing after that added a bunch more. So the good news here is that I ran my 9.6@146 while being way down on power! I had a funny feeling my trap speed was low…and the dyno proved it. Thankfully we got it all back through tuning and picked up a little more with the ported blower…

WOW!!! Those tires poke out a lot for being 315s. Good to know. I'm looking forward to more input on those tires, too. I know King' likes them.

NICE!!! It's going to rip even harder. Looking forward to updated times, too
