1972 mustang!

So don't hate and think I'm a traitor, but this sunday my dad and I will be picking up a 1972 mustang! My dad's best friend unfortunately passed away a few months ago and his family decided to give my dad the car. The car has been sitting in a storage unit for at least 5+ years now and I was just curious what all should be done to it. I tried posting in a vintage mustang forum, but the community was not nearly as friendly or helpful as all you guys!!! anyways i figured it would at least need a new battery and gas. I also researched and found new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and tranny fluid may be necessary. I was just curious if this all seemed necessary and right to you guys and what other maintenance may be in order for a car that has sat so long. Also im wondering how to tell exactly what engine it is, as im told in may be the 351 cleveland R-code which is much more rare and has higher performance. Thanks in advance for any of the info you guys can give i truly appreciate it!!!

Not a traitor at all, I have a 69 Stang in my garage. Vintage-mustang.com gave you a hard time? Usually some really good people over there. Sorry I don't know much about 72's, but the usual fluid changes, battery, brakes, should get you moving down the road.

Mine sat for 12 years when I picked it up. Needed nothing more than a carb cleaning, some decent gas and a battery and fired right up. Good luck!

If possible use 100% 91 octane or higher gas in it. Ethanol is not friendly to some of the older engines..

Look over the tires really well, blowouts on dry-rotted tires are no fun. Make a few hard stops before getting onto the main road to check brake lines and hoses. Finally, run the power steering against the stop for a second to check the power steering hoses.

So we picked up the mustang! Turned out to be in much better shape than we anticipated! Jumped it and sprayed some starter fluid in the carb and she fired right up! Anyways it is a 1972 Mustang Convertible with the Cleveland 351CJ-4V (Q Code) motor! Here's a pic! (This was at the storage unit and the car was caked in dust and was fairly dirty inside and out. It's much prettier and shinier today after we spent 3 hours washing and cleaning it, but it's raining so I cant get a nice pic)

That is nice. That's an odd blue for a Mustang so maybe it was a special order car. I remember LTDs and trucks in that color but not
Mustangs.

They had a light blue color that year. Q code engine should be the 265hp Cobra Jet engine. Beautiful car

Well I'm 21 and dont have a wife. But I have to disagree that it's not manly enough or womanly in anyway. Maybe not as aggressive looking as a '69 or 70' mustang, but I think its nice!

Message from "The Pill" on SVTP forums:

On Camaro5, there is a guy that just inherited a 1972 Mustang. He has reason to believe that it is a 351 Cleveland.

Please let him know that the 351 Cleveland (R code) was very rare. It can be identified from the 351 Windsor by its 8 bolt 2-plane valve covers (Windsor had 5 bolt straight covers), the radiator hose does not connect to intake (Windsor does) and the Cleveland used small 14mm spark plugs (Windsor used 5/8.

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208602

If it is a Q code, I need to know ASAP... Thanks in advance...
