I learned to drive manual by watching my brother drive his 2001 SS. It helps you get a mental picture, and the sound of the engine as the clutch begins to engage. My wife on our first date had to drive us home in my 5 speed mach 1 because I got effed up. Even she said with the torque of a v8 it's almost impossible to stall and because you only have to give it about 2 MM of throttle to move the car. I also test drove an A8 SS and I didn't like it either. When you're taking an on ramp hard or bending a corner you don't want to make sure the transmission doesn't shift on you mid corner.

Isn't that what manual mode is for?

I've only owned sticks and this order I went auto. This will be my daily driver in a lot of stop and go traffic. I look forward to having the auto for the daily drive, and the manual mode for the thrill rides.

Sport mode in the auto will reward this type of driving, I tried it while doing a track day in the 5thGen years ago and it knows when to hold gears as it learns your driving style.

I was determined to learn how to drive stick and no one in my family had one for me to learn on. So when I was about 21-22 I just went out to many dealers and test drove a bunch of manuals. For me it came very naturally and quickly because I was determined to learn, watched the Dukes of Hazzard religiously when I was a kid, and built plastic model cars. I basically fantasized about and was obsessed with rowing my own gears.

That was about 16 years ago and I have never even considered owning an automatic nor will I ever.

If you want to learn and want to buy your Camaro with a stick just go out and test drive manuals at dealers.

All of you that are saying this thread will turn into a shit show are the ones making it turn into a shit show. If you read the relevant comments most of them are tame and not judgemental. I have quite enjoyed reading the posts from the people wanting to learn to drive a manual.

A bad day driving a stick was getting caught in a monsoon and having to get out to go under the hood because the gears on my truck were hung up, the old 3 on the tree days. Good times from my youth.

LOL. My buddies and me went off roading with his dad's 3 on the tree pickup once a long time ago and we were sideways on a hill and the old frame on the truck tweaked enough to where it got stuck in gear also. We had to get out and lift on one side to get it straight enough to shift to get out of there

The clutch pedal is about as useful and about as much fun as unpowered windshield wipers.

I can't imagine settling for a six speed manual when an eight speed auto with paddle shifters is available.

They'll have a manual to drive in a few days but at this point, I am 100% sure that I'll not be getting the auto even though I have a 40 minute stop and go commute. If you're used to a manual in a muscle/pony car and are considering switching to auto, it's going to be a tough sell. Tougher than I was expecting. I'm going to miss having remote start here in the desert.

On another note, what a beautiful car and the interior is gorgeous. I can't wait to order one!
So what didn't you like about it?

Don't worry about Eric, people just have strong opinions than others, and this thread is not going to go downhill, unless people get outta hand with their comments. I too want a manual, but always ended up with an auto, mainly due to work. It would be kind of hard talking on the radio while shifting a manual, I even have a difficult time with it while auto shifting on my current car. I know once I retire, I will be getting a manual.

I just didn't enjoy the experience of not being able to row my own gears in a car that is not meant to be tame if that makes sense. I enjoy the A8 in my BMW because it's meant to be smooth and deliver power in a linear way. When I'm driving a muscle/pony car, I want it to feel almost unrefined and a bit unpredictable when I slam on the gas. I want the power to be instantaneous and unbridled. I know it's NOT slow, but when I got on the Camaro A8, it didn't feel any faster than my current car. I know it is, but I didn't get the perception of speed. If felt much slower than my M6 99 Camaro SS was and I know it's not. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed when I mashed on the gas and it downshifted and took off. I was expecting 455hp to feel faster. I'm hoping I can get that feeling when I drive the M6 when one comes in.
