Chevrolet Camaro stays true to its purpose
Mustang owners like to boast about how well the new Mustang has sold compared to the rival Camaro, but the Camaro was designed in 1967 to simply outrun and outperform the Ford Mustang. That is exactly what it did then, and 50 years later it is exactly what it is doing today with the 6th Gen Camaro.

I think it's hilarious how a lot of the Mustang "enthusiasts" claim that sales is the most important criteria for what makes a car good. Whatever makes 'em sleep better I guess.

I'm in my 30s and have only owned GM's. Pontiac was my preference. I own a 2016 Camaro 2SS now and without a doubt it is the best car I have ever owned.
I know the Ford Mustang/Chevy Camaro pony car war and bashing has been around for awhile. And it can be fun!...But I seriously think we have to give the Devil his due. Not only is the Mustang the reason the Camaro/Firebird arriving in 1967...It is the reason for it's return. THE MAIN POINT OF MY POST IS THIS: The sales of the Mustang in the mid-2000s is what brought the Camaro back from the grave in 2009 (for the 2010 model year)... anyone that is a true Pony car enthusiast and especially those that will only drive a Camaro like myself has to have a love deep inside for the Mustang because without it the Camaro/Firebird may have never drove the streets. A GM loyalist that is beyond thankful for the Mustang! |

But even I cannot deny that it was a factor in the Camaro's return. Just as Camaro is a factor for Mustang's performance upgrades over the past years. |

I am perfectly ok with the 8 year gap in the Camaro's history as it is nothing compared to having to deal with the legacy left behind by the Mustang II.

Or that anemic 4.6 that was so low powered for so many years.

I'll agree but disagree Ford didn't revive the pony market they were around and like stated had sales that didn't improve on our 8 yr. hiatus at all if not for atleast the early chargers the market may have gone stagnant and GM might have said let's focus somewhere else. I hear the Mustang Camaro story over again and again in the recent years and i'm not taking anything away from the rivalry nor am I a Mopar Fanboy i'm about as far from it as can be but without the street success of the chargers do you honestly think we'd be where we are today? Sales don't make a car great but they certainly help keep things alive and kicking.

Btw- the sales are probably due to mass market appeal, which usually has nothing or little to do with which car edges on the other. The only reason I remotely care about camaro sales is I want there to be enough sales so that there is a gen7 and I can buy that. But by then I'll probably be deciding between the next generation corvette or viper pending nothing better in that price range being released. Brand loyalty stagnates innovation. I love Chevy and have a LS1 tattoo but if another car came out that suited my tastes more id get that. But I doubt it because of how Chevy sees cornering there market is in line with the type of car i like. |
