ET difference with skinnies

Curious on the gains by running a 17x4.5 skinny vs stock front

I am set up with a bias ply slick for the rear and have read and heard horror stories on mixing bias ply and radials on a car.

I'm curious too about running skinnies. I have a 305/40/18 MT DR in the back and plan on adding a 28x4.5x17 MH radial upfront. Will this help et and how does it feel on the street?

You’ll pick up around a tenth

They drive fine. Just corners like crap. Have to go around them much slower

So would you say the price to gain ratio is worth it or better spent on other bolt on mods?

Anyone run a bias ply slick on the rear with a radial street tire on front with no issues?

General rule it to run a radial with a radial and bias with a bias. If a car gets squirrelly and they are miss matched, it's not a fun ride.

If you drive the car on the street a lot then don't put skinnies on it. I had 17x4.5's on my 4th gen for a year and went back to 17x7 because braking is compromised along with handling. If you have to make a quick maneuver due to some idiot on the road its not going to end well. And before I get a response that I am comparing a 4th gen...mine is not stock suspension or brakes. It still not quite as good as a 6th gen stock but it's close so I feel its a comparable situation.

I am just planning to run them for local list racing at the drag strip. I live 4 miles down the road from the track and plan to throw them on and cruise down the back streets to get there and race, then throw my street tires back on to drive on street.

It’s worth it IMO.

If you drive them on the street and go with 17x4.5 you need to be cautious. Like I said they handle like crap. You are only driving 4 miles that’s nothing. I have to drive 80 miles to the track on them.

Whoa, I bet that makes for an alert trip.

Yep. As was said everything is worse not just turning. Braking won’t be as good either

My stockers weigh about 60 each and my skinny setup weighs 32 each so I would guess close to a tenth in et.

I ran a set of M&H 28" skinny radials last year and the tires felt like they wanted to roll-on itself on exit ramps and such. I went with a set of bias ply M&H this year(28 also) and the difference is night and day. The car rides and handles really well. I have MT R's in the rear.

I would strongly suggest to anyone looking to go skinnies to go bias ply up front regardless of rear tire, you will thank me later.

To my surprise, they both weigh the same at 17lbs too.

Well I am cutting myself off on ordering parts for a few minutes. I broke down and ordered the 17x4.5 front wheels and made Summit beat the Jegs price on the Hoosier 27.5/4.5-17 bias ply front runners.

I think my next venture will involve gathering parts until I am ready to bolt it all on and get a tune.

Thanks everyone for the helpful input on this stuff, its greatly appreciated.

On that note, what tire pressure you run on the fronts?
