Jerry cans are your friend.
When I first moved to Saskatchewan, I realized it was the complete opposite of what I grew up with in Ontario. Here in SK, you every gas station has diesel available, but only specific ones carry premium gas. |

In my Colorado Diesel, it comes on with approximately 2 gallons left in the tank, based on the fuel range counter and my average MPG. So, I would imagine that it applies to pretty much all GM vehicles, approx. 2-3 gallons left.

I don't usually let it get below a 1/4 tank, it's happened twice so far. Makes me twitchy, like if I get on it too much, I'll use up what's left really fast. |

I believe we have two fuel pumps, low pressure in tank and high pressure up front.
I am not a fan of letting the gas get low enough for the warning light to come on. From what I have read, the fuel in the tank helps prolong the pump life by keeping it cooler, both by uninterrupted flow through the pump and a heat sink effect from the pump being surrounded by liquid fuel. On older cars there was also the issue of picking up sediment as the fuel level got lower, which wasn't such a big deal when the fuel filter was easy to get to. Now the filter is in the pump and hard to access. My wife was a chronic "drive it till the DTE hits single digits" driver. Then she burned out the fuel pump in her Audi A4. Only electric fuel pump I've had to replace in a modern car, so I tend to believe logic about cooling and pump longevity. |

Car mileage
I watched the "remaining miles" screen as I was about to hit E and the last number it displayed before telling me low fuel was 44 miles.

Very bad to drive this way. You should not let your tank get below 1/4. Many reasons- keep your fuel pump cooler, condensation in the tank, etc. I always gas up at 1/3 tank.
