You can run 89 octane but the LT4 doesn’t especially like it. I try to use 93 or 92 octane all the time in mine.

Shouldn't have issues with really any major brand 93 gas, Shell and Costco are both top tier.

The car is a 11/20 build. I have almost 600 miles on the car and this is the first time it has done this and I have been driving it semi-aggressively since I got it (under 4K rpm until last night). Today when it made the sound it did it at 3k while revving up. The other 3 times i got on it it didn’t make a sound.

This is what is making me think I got some low octane fuel in it. I’m going to take it easy with it until I can get some more Costco gas it.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the replies/suggestions. This car is new to me and I’m learning it’s characteristics... so GM wasn’t kidding when they say use 93 octane
West coast only has 91 octane and my car doesn't like it. A lot depends on temps, altitude, driving style etc. as to what octane you need.

I spike mine 10-1 with xylene and it brings the octane to 93. Anything below 92(ish) trips my KS.

Check out your KS on a pull or 2. You might have to boost octane above 93 for your area.

Thanks for the tip. I did exactly what you described and it seems to have stopped the pinging. My favorite gas brands are BP, Shell, and Costco, but I don’t think I will be using that Shell station any more. I’m fairly confident they gave me 87 octane for the price of 93.

Thanks again.

Interesting, I had a similar although not as bad experience with Shell once. I always double-check what they pump into the car (yes, I know, it's NJ, spare me the jokes ), and it was their v-power plus or whatever they call 93.

Only BP or Costco for me since then, with a bit of Race-Gas occasionally.

That is interesting because I know that some of the 2018+ mustang GT folks had knock issues with shell. Some of them swore that the 93 octane shell caused the issues. I used shell (from this same station) in my 2018 gt and never had an issue.

The only other thing I could really think of is that I have been pushing the car too frequently in it’s early life and getting enough oil blow by to cause enough oil to get into the cylinders via pcv system. I’m just really guessing with that... think I will check the intake for fun of it. Probably just a bad tank of gas but I will check anyway.

Sounds as if it might have been some bad gas or maybe the wrong gas at the pump. I have found that putting a bottle of STP or Valvoline gas treatment helps some especially in my ZL1. Take it a little easier on the LT1 and you will be rewarded with a better running and performing engine and that’s my opinion only. I have always had better luck over the years with breaking in a new engine easier than balls to the walls driving as they seem to last longer and not have any issues further down the road. Good luck.

FWIW, I've used Shell a couple of times. In fact, just filled up with it last night. (The 91 flavor with xylene on top). Burned a quarter tank with no issues.
