To me, if you're always looking back to ZL1s, you'll still feel that way even w/ a supercharged SS - it's just not the real thing. The ZL1 is the complete package. You might as well get the real deal. A supercharged SS is worth only as much as a stock SS, whereas a ZL1 is worth a ZL1.

However, I'd say if you have the money and are just thinking about a simple factory setup that you can leave alone, get a ZL1. It seems you're eyeballing the "top dog" trim in your heart anyway, and if that's true, that small voice will never go away unless you do it. If you can swing it and don't mind the refreshed rear, definitely buy/order a new one on account of the more modern electronics, but if you're okay with a used one with low miles, the upgrade cost will be roughly the same as it was on day 1 when you bought the SS.

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...=578242&page=6 I know your initial question pertained only to 1/4 mile performance, but there is so much more to the ZL1 than just the fuel & SC upgrades. If you are a seasoned drag racer you’ll be able to do just fine. I have two things, hopefully, planned to do this year: A trip to Road America & to the strip. These cars are more centered around the road course, but they go in a straight line pretty well. Your SS is very sharp, & low miles so you should get good bank for it! Some 20 & 21’s around me for a little more than what I paid for mine a few months ago. (Employee pricing, less options, etc) I still wouldn’t want them due to not being able to tune the TCM on 20+. Food for thought if you plan on going crazy with it in the future. |

Hell, there's TONS of bolt-on Pray and GPI SS's that are faster than my ZL1, just depends.

ZLE A10 all stock..air box, tires, etc all factory. Only Dot 4 and 15 50 oil (as Im a road course guy.)
They had a test and tune day so I thought it would be fun to go to. I ran an 11.8 at 122 in my second run. This was my first attempt with this car and first time at the drag strip in about 5yrs. |

Depending on the temps, my 2020 1LE with an A-10 runs 11.2 @ 124mph at 55F to 11.5 @ 120MPH at 90F. Stock other than R888R's.

I had a 2017 Camaro 2SS every option except sunroof. Great car! I now have a 2018 ZL1 and it's better in every category accept fuel economy. I've had several high horsepower Camaros and Corvettes and the ZL1 is by far the best handling/ performing and trouble free car I've ever owned. I had a similar dilemma. Buy a SS 1LE and supercharge it, or go with a ZL1. Since I’d done a bunch of pretty serious stock bottom end builds in the past, and decided I needed a break, I bought a ZL1.
Headers, intake, and my self tuning resulted in a 10.79 @ nearly 133 mph the one time I had it at the track in about 1000 ft DA. I’ve done a blower pulley since, and I think it’ll do a 10.5x @ 135. Should be pretty easy to put back to stock if I ever want to, and I have no fear of it breaking like was always in the back of my mind with engines not built for boost. |

The ZL1 is still a better car all around either way, I am just pointing out the real capability differences between the LT1 and LT4 in stock form. I would say the LT1 can be pretty reliable to 750whp in the right hands and the LT4 850whp. If they had a better Thrust bearing design that could tolerate a PD or Centri supercharger putting a huge load on the crank snout then 1k whp easily. Everybody though the LT4 was capable of huge power in the beginning when LPE made 1400hp with turbos on a SBE LT4, but the key again was the Turbos and taking the load off the crank.

Yeah, I’m not claiming my car is insanely fast or anything. But for a few easy bolt ons and essentially stock reliability, I’m really happy with how it turned out. And at least for me, I see zero need for more power on a street driven car unless I was planning to run around with my drag pack on all the time. Doing that kind of defeats the purpose of a car like a ZL1, to me anyway. |
