Key Fob doesn't work in a certain parking lot
Whelp, finally found a place where my car will fully refuse to answer the keyfob. I had to "break in" to my own car yesterday by pulling the vanity cap on the door handle and using the mechanical lock to get it and then place my fob in the rear cup holder.
It's only my apartment parking lot that does it and it doesn't matter where in the lot I park. I can be even on top of my car, from the front, sides, rear, holding against glass, under the fender (trying to block external radios), near the rear lights, etc. Nothing... It'll kinda flicker from time to time, but not consistently. It only does it in this parking lot and nowhere else. In fact, the 1st time it happened, I just thought my fob battery was dead, dying or the remote got wet because it was raining. But, having tested it out, it is specifically this parking lot for my apartment. How have other people gone around this issue when they're getting external RF interference from the local environment? This is my apartment complex I'm just now moving in to, so it's not somewhere I can really avoid. |

Hmm, have you tried the onstar app? You get to use the remote app for 5 years. That might be a suitable workaround.

No, I won't use the OnStar App. I read through their TOS and EULA and found their terms to be questionable. Specifically the parts referring to me giving them the right to have my app transmit phone telemetry even if the application isn't running in the foreground. That's a huge no-no in my book.

yes, see it before...saw it in person last year at a BMW dealership, the used car lot would not get fobs due to towers close to lot...

Talk to dealer maybe they can reprogram the frequency to another band kind of like you would have to do with a router if you were getting interference. Then they will have to reprogram you key fobs.. Not even sure if it's doable

That's really odd, never heard of anything like that before. It kinda makes me want to go to your lot parking lot and see if I have the same problem.

As an update. A friend of mine had a loaner. A 2016 Nissan Altima. His remote failed exactly the same way mine did. He had to use a manual key to enter the car and then pocket the fob to start the car. His other cars, both older, don't have this problem with their fobs. Nor does his fiancee's 5th gen nor did my 2012 Grand Sport. So there's something with newer cars that's causing them to be susceptible to this issue.
There is something in the vicinity, a cell tower, wireless premises alarm system, etc. that's causing this issue when in the common surface lots. I've noticed that while in my garage unit, if I stand just behind the driver's door and hold the fob close to the c-pillar, it works just fine. So, whatever is causing the issue outside is dampened just enough when I'm backed in for the fob to work. However, that's only to use it from outside. Once I step in to and sit in the car, sometimes it'll say "no fob detected" and I have to pocket the fob to start. |
