Tow hook

Added a nose ring to my Z/28. Went with the premium model from ZL1 add ons. Very nice, quality built unit. I have an uncanny knack for turning a 2 hour project into a 2 day project and this was no exception. Of course I had to clean and detail all exposed areas once inner fender liner was out but I figured while I was there what the heck. With the hoop installed it sorta reminds me of a young lady I once pursued. The car is much more dependable .

Never looked into tow hook / nose ring, but are they there for looks or do they really serve its purpose? If there for purpose, will it really pull its weight on the flat bed tow truck? Enlighten me please.

Its been glorified into a fun add on item for show.

Yes, they serve their purpose. Some tracks REQUIRE it. Also go outside and have a look at the front splitter if you ever need a tow truck on the highway, do the scenario in your head about where/how the driver will chain your car up the flatbed. Its good insurance for track and street. Cars arent very easy to get out of a sand trap/tire wall without something to 'yank' from.

Yes, I have noticed they can be quite the novelty addition. Since I prefer the stock, original look I just unscrew it and keep it with my spare tire accessories. I also purchased the rear hook set-up. God knows I'll make a project out of that also but it's time well spent.

Hi Roger,

Bizarrely - there isn't one.

As the Z/28 wasn't officially sold in Europe they didn't have to add one. Other 5th gen Camaros for Europe got a front crashbar with the different part number that included provision for a tow hook.

If you need one for competition purposes (like I did), or peace of mind, you have to modify. There are some guides on here, but ultimately you have to drill the front crashbar. (or buy the Europe spec crashbar if you can find one)

From what I can tell, the front crash bar threads are right behind the painted bumper portion of the ZL1, not behind the grill area. I bought a crash bar that was threaded thinking it would work. Nope, and I'm not drilling a hole through the bumper. Back to the drawing board.

I can personally attest to it working as I've used it as the winch point hauling the car onto my trailer several times. It's real, it works, and it's better than broken splitter and busted control arms because tow truck drivers don't give a @#$%.

I got the rear as well, but said eff that to drilling holes through everything back there. Just yank me around by the front, dern it. I'm fine with drilling a hole through the front crash bar but not through the actual bumper of the rear.

Hm,
thats funny, especially the American Cars are full of safety stuff like the
Escape-Emergency-Cord in the Trunk for kidnapped People.

But an Tow Hook ore even an precaution for it isnt Available ( ??? ).

My 2.nd Car is an BMW M2 Competition which has an Tow Hook an some Tools inside the Trunk.

Especially the Z28 which has a Special Front with a Splitter it should be important to have an Tool to Tow that Car without any damage.

Realy strange

Roger

Here's a thread I did when I had my 1LE that has some information including OEM part numbers that you might find useful.

Most track days require a front tow hook, so if you not tracking probably don't need one unless you have to get towed. You can order the tow hook for a standard gen 5 camaro it does not look as good but performs the function. The ZL1 Add ons one looks good!
