Nasty intake valves

Anyone know if it’s possible to clean the intake valves while on the car? Had the manifold off and took a peak inside. Had some gooey tar looking buildup on the bottom third of the stem.

Generally, people use walnut shell blasting to address the carbon buildup.

That said, I believe GM addressed the carbon buildup issue before. They mentioned that it is mostly just aesthetic. The buildup doesn't meaningfully impact performance.

I’ve had my catch can on since about 8k miles. It was just kinda ugly. I did see a video that I think Mishimoto posted of some jackoffs using compressed air and a wire wheel inside the intake port. THAT made me want to head butt a knife.

Anyway, maybe next time I have the manifold off I’ll use some carb cleaner and a vacuum.

Another member from Canada has 175k miles and had the same buildup, but no issues for him.

26k. Seemed a little much for “low” miles. I should have taken a picture when I had the manifold off😕. Next time.... carb cleaner toothbrush and a vacuum.

Just give it the "Italian Tune Up", you can get the intake valve temps over the point deposits form and it'll help burn them off.

Jason did mention that it works on PI engines, but not necessarily on DI engines. He even said that it can actually worsen the issue on a DI engine from the Italian tune-up.

Realistically, you won't get the intake valves hot enough unless you are hitting a track.

I mean, it's not like you are going to look at the intake valve all day. If there is a little bit of buildup, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Sent from toaster or something

Yea I figured it’s not a huge deal it was just ugly. Now my 2002 Ford Explorer was disgusting. I had my brother hold rpms at 5k while I dumped an entire can of carb cleaner into the intake. Did it work? Idk. But it didn’t blow up and I just tapped 300k.

It definitely works on DI engines.

The issues VW had with their engines were highly dependent on driving habits. Our 6.2L has a stock air/oil separator and new oils are less volatile so maybe it doesn't matter but you can definitey get the intake valves hot enough on the street.
