2016 A8 converter ?`s
Not doing lots of upgrades to my 2016 SS with the A8 transmission but am thinking a converter change would let the car leave better but don`t want to make the car not street/highway able. Has anyone done this project and how did it go. I think the OEM stall is probably 1500 to 2000.

3600 stall seems to be standard for NA stuff. The factory converter is like 2400...it doesn't feel that way because the converter is primarily locked in all the gears at all times except idle. so you will only notice it slip on the launch. With a larger stall I don't think you can lock the converter until 4th so you will notice some slip(more rpm to get moving) in the first 3 gears. If that is concerning then get a 3200. That should drive darn near like stock and allow for better launches with traction.

Thanks King. Do you have any particular converter builder to suggest?

Question for KingLT1. In your experience do you see any advantage or disadvantage in useing a 1 disc converter or a 2 or 3 disc converter in a pretty much stock car?

I believe they only offer triple disk as a minimum for the 8l90 transmissions. Stock is a 3 disk which allows them to handle being locked @ WOT. The older 4 speed stuff you could get single disk converters that would work fine because those transmissions didn't lock the converter @ WOT.

I just had the Circle D 258mm Pro Series 3200-3400 installed. I love it. Pretty much drives like stock....more than I thought it would. But what it does is keep the RPMs up around 3000 when shifting if throttle is above 30%. I'm totally guessing there. if you drive really mellow, it drives like stock. A little aggressive and you'll see tach jump up to 3000 rpms right away and kind of stay there during shifts too.
This is my first converter. I gave Circle D my cam specs and told them I wanted this to drive like stock except when I get on it or launch. They recommended 3200-3400. Everyone kept telling me not to worry. After driving with it....they were right. The converters are not as loose as you might think. I'm happy.

3200 stall is pretty conservative and doesn't give up much if any street manners. I don't think drive-ability becomes compromised until you start talking 4000+ converters. I had a FTI 3800 billet single disk in my 4th gen and it drove pretty nice. Only needed 2200rpm to accelerate with traffic and 3k rpm to start pulling pretty good.

How about 3600 stall 3 disc and move the lockup to 4th gear and leave everything else alone for what I want to do?

3600 stall is pretty standard for a basic street/strip NA setup... Should work great.
