Engine Failure at COTA

Yep, there is a first time for everything - an engine failure while tracking! I wonder if I am the 1st 1LE failure - not something I am proud of . . . I thought today would be great, first run was good, no problems and impressed with this car. Second run, between turns 14 and 15, different story.

What I like about the 1LE: goes exactly where you point it - really impressive stuff and excellent grip out of the Goodyears. They may not be as good as MPSC2s but I could not tell. They seemed every bit as good as Dunlap Sport Max or Michelins but I did not have enough seat time to really judge. The car grips for days. Goes hard, plenty of get up for a 3,700+ lb car, and it stops well. It needs to coming into turn 12 at 142 MPH!

Didn't like: brake feel is a bit vague; it stops great just not a lot of feel in the pedal. Rolls a little too much, especially in the ass. then, there is the engine self destruction

No, I did not abuse it. 1,500 miles of taking it easy and I took it to the dealer for oil, diff, and brake service (added SRF) plus strut bar installation and track alignment with inspection. Pushed it harder for the next 100 miles and then to COTA today.

Yes, it is on video/PDR but I had the flatbed dump the car at the dealer here in Austin and left the chip in it. The video, reviewed by me and others shows 2nd gear climbing between 4k-5k headed from turn 14 to 15 as you straight line that section . . . . and KABLAMM!

I felt it and it felt horrible, lots of metal chewing on itself. Best guess, valve dropped and it all went to hell. The 2 minute video of my first lap of my second session shows all is well until it was not.

Hopefully, Chevy takes care of it and puts a new motor for me in a car I really love.

Totally sucks for you as I know you had plenty of more great fun left in the day had this not happened. Sorry to hear.

Hopefully you're not modded in any way and things are in order.

I guess now we will all find out if the 1LE warranty REALLY covers tracking the car.

ZERO mods/all OEM. Believe it or not, that is the way I roll on any track car I own because I don't want any warranty excuses.

The great news, it really is a great track car. I wish it had lasted a full day at COTA.

When you get back the SD card run it through the cosworth toolbox program and check oil temps. I'm assuming you didn't switch to the recommended 5w40 dexos2 oil for track days?

Did you check the oil level after the dealer serviced it? I've read on here that some technicians mistakenly go by 5th gen specs.

What was your oil temp, also did you switch to the 5-40 oil, I have been preaching oil cooler and all the "experts" on here say " this car is track ready" even though it's a proven point oil over 250 looses its ability to lubricate the hotter it gets but the "experts" think 270 is just fine. I'll be following this post to see if it's covered and i gm sees if it was a high oil temp issue and won't cover it
