Had a chance to play around with this some more today. Around town, turning the dial all the way down nets 2 psi, which would be great if you got caught in less than optimal traction conditions. Mid point on the dial nets 8 psi (in my case) which is plenty for 98% of street use. Full turn up on the dial gives you full boost (whatever your pulley combo is capable of), or 15.9 psi in my case. Probably best saved for the racetrack. But having all this adjustability with no pulley changes is great!

Boost on demand ... I like it.

Awesome, I’m not at the high power levels like Josh. I’ve been hesitant to go that high due to reasons mentioned. This product may change my mind if I can dial it back. Very cool.

If you put a switch for the full boost(I don't remember the color of the wire from the controller of SB, u can check it with ur manual), it is act like Nitro it is quite fun and scary.

or just dial all the way up during WOT.

At some point I’ll probably do a Holley Dominator ECU and that would let me interface with the Smoothboost to control boost by gear, plus an automatic boost dump if I run lean for any reason. I’m liking the possibilities with this boost controller.

So, a 2023 update: the Smoothboost is awesome and definitely needed to make the jump from my Whipple 2.9 to my new Whipple 3.0 blower. But the bracket and linkage are completely different on the new blower. So I sent Levon @ Smoothboost a pic of the new bypass setup and he promised to send me a different bracket to try since he has not seen the new 3.0 yet.

So the new bracket arrived and Levin thinks that if I just pull out the linkage “extension” piece that it could work. Close, but no cigar. I probably could have chanced it but didn’t want to guess. We really needed an extension piece, but one that was only 1/2” long! So my brother took my wife’s jewelry saw (she’s a silversmith) and carefully cut down the extension. He then brought it to a machine shop nearby that specializes in precision work. They drilled the piece lengthwise and then tapped it all the way through. After fiddling with the adjustment screws and testing out the actuator (both retracted and fully extended…very important or you’ll burn out the actuator), I think we’ve got it right! And I sent my results to Levon in hopes that future Whipple 3.0 buyers will be able to buy the Smoothboost without all the custom work that I always end up getting stuck with…

I cut the original bypass bracket and did some custom works.

Your swivel piece at the end is pretty far out on the threaded portion… I feel like you’re asking for trouble on that…! Adding the 1/2” solid extension piece eliminates that issue.

Josh, just like you told me would happen I’m in the same boat lol. Is the extension you cut part of the one you received for your 2.9 kit? Looks like I’ll be taking the same route as you. Going to message Levon and see if he can sent me the extension and do the same as you. Itching to get this build done. Just got my intake runners back from Katech to add the port injection.

Yes, we took the big extension that came with the Smoothboost originally for the 2.9 and cut it down to 1/2” long (it’s probably 1.5”-2.0” long uncut). The end we cut off was mostly drilled through so the shop cleaned that up and then tapped it all the way through. You need to do that since both ends are being screwed into obviously.

As I touched on before, you need to make sure you have full extension of the actuator and that full extension is 100% closed on the bypass… if the actuator cannot reach full extension you’ll burn out the actuator. And you don’t want any binding either.

Hope that helps!

I checked the Smoothboost website, their bypass just uses a PWM output to control boost. If we can dig up the PID address for gear position on the GM CAN bus, it shouldn't be too tough to tie gear position into desired boost with the Reflex+ boost control - just thinking out loud here.
