Has Anyone Changed Their Center Support Bearing on Driveshaft?
So after thinking I had something rolling around in the trunk on hard takeoff and while turning in first on the gas hearing thumping. I figure out with pretty high confidence that I've finally killed the stock flimsey center support on the Driveshaft.
It looks like once I get the drive shaft out I may have to press it out of the bearing to put the new one on? Not sure though? It looks like GM has updated it to a new part number 84255731, so hopefully they made it stiffer and stronger. Hopefully it improves the POS sounding rattle/knocking when going from drive to reverse to neutral. |

I would but it's hard to justify the price. I hate the clunking and noises but I would rather deal with it and keep replacing supports than spend 1500.
I haven't been able to find anyone who has bought a ZL1 driveshaft for a automatic. I think a ZL1 Driveshaft will work for a manual but not sure for an automatic. Although I guess it would still probably have the same problem, but I've never driven a ZL1 to confirm. |

So I put a new one on. I had bought a brand new shop press since I figured I needed one for other things and I went to try to put the drive shaft under it and the u joint yoke was too big to fit under the hole between the steel beams in the press. So the press basically was useless for this job. I bought the 20 ton harbor freight one and it was just barely too small.
I ended up getting the bearing off with a 12 dollar jaw gear puller it wasn't on that hard of a press fit. I tapped the new one on with a pipe. |

Agreed. The factory SS driveshaft if very weak at that point where it meets the center carrier bearing. For evidence, I submit exhibit A to the court:
