Exclamation Michelin Pilot Super Sport Size & Fitment

Hey guys, I know this topic has been quite extensively discussed, but I am unable to find a clear-cut answer as it seems to differ from individual to individual . Winter season is coming and I have chosen to run the sottozeros (305 rear 285 front; buying a lightly used pair of the 305 rears off a local, will have to purchase the 285s elsewhere), we'll see how that goes - review coming next season Yet, I want to be prepared once the weather gets nice again next season for a nice summer-tire upgrade over the stock Goodyears. Overall, I am looking for a good street tire that will also hook well if I gas it hard. The Goodyears are not the best in hooking if I gas it so I am wondering if the Super Sports will be better. Everyone seems to be thrilled with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports on this forum and I am considering getting a set for my ZL1, yet, everyone seems to give different responses in terms of optimal sizing on the stock ZL1 rims. I have heard either 285 front & 315 rear or 295 front & 315 rear (even though the Super Sports run wider compared to other brands). I am worried about rubbing or any sort of fitment issues that may arise and just want to be informed before I make the purchase. Thus, I am wondering:

(1) Do the Michelin Pilot Super Sports hook well on the street if I gas it hard? I am looking for a tire that will bring me the closest I can get to a DR without losing daily drive-ability (can drive in rain without losing significant traction, etc) and would hold up on the streets mileage-wise.

(2) What is the optimal fitment for the best hooking capabilities without rubbing? Numerous people have said previously that the 315 Super Sports in the rear cause no issues, but I am skeptical . I have also heard the 295s rub in the front while the 285s do not; don't know if that is accurate or not. Would the 285 / 315 combo be better or the 295 / 315 combo?

I appreciate the input and any replies / recommendations! Thanks in advance!

I have ran the 285/315 pilot SS tires and they are a good all around tire. I have not had any thing else other than the GY's so you are probably going to get other answers from the ones who are running different tires and they are going to say they like them also. The SS tire seemed to hold the car better than the GY's but I do not think you will get a street tire that is going to completely stop a traction issue unless you go with a drag radial and you will still get some spinning. So you will just have to make up your own mind which ones you want. I will tell you this though when I need new tires again it will be the pilot SS.

I just ended up buying continental extreme contact dws 06's for my ZL1 so I could drive it throughout the winter (CA winter mind you - rain, no snow).

Based on doing a lot of forum reading, I chose 285/30-20's for the front, and 315/35-20's for the back. Puts a nice subtle "butt's up" rake on the car. No rubbing / driving issues.

I have the 315 rear 295 up front. They are much better than the GYs. They hook up way better in colder temps and no rubbing whatsoever. I have about 25,000 miles on them.

I haven't gone that route yet but have heard that the 295 will kick rocks down your side a bit more and my buddy did cut one of the 295s when he was on the track. I am going to go with the 285/315 on my ride as soon as they are available. The PSS seems to ride better and don't seem as loud as stock. I noticed this when I drove my buddies Z.

I have a set of winter Sottozero's II on other rims, 285 all around so I can rotate later on.

I'm in the same vote as you for summer tires, my goodyears are done and were complete garbage from day 1.

From what I've read on here I am going with the Comp II's 305 in the rear, 285 in the front. Im in Vancouver so the weather is a bit cooler but we don't get snow

Thanks for all the replies guys. Still debating on what size setup I should go with. Does anybody know which setup would benefit me more drag-racing wise? I believe the 285/315 combo would be ideal; would there be any benefits to the 295/315 combo in terms of hooking the road over the 285/315 combo?

I had the factory Goodyears until about 12k miles. Good tires, but not great for hookups. Started drag racing and turned to the Nitto 555R's (305) on the rears. What a difference. I could take off in first and almost never slip. Enjoyed the Heck out of them. Unfortunately, both rears got screws on the sidewall?!?! Had the Nitto's for 4k miles. Now, (exhausted) have the 315/35/20 Michelin SS. Excellent on dry and wet roads. I'm satisfied with these new tires. Slips time to time, but overall, comfortable and does the job. I now a have 3k miles on them.

(0-60 feet)
Goodyears - 1.987 (CAI, 93 TUNE) April '15
Nitto's - 1.676 (10% OD, CAI, 93 TUNE) June '15

I currently reside in Midland, TX. HOT AND DRY TEMPS from April-September.

For all around driving, I enjoy the Michelins. For get up and go style of operating, Nitto's were fun.

Thanks for the input! I've heard a lot about the 555Rs. When buying them, were you thinking about the toyo R888s as well? Many seem to be split between those two and say both are great. I don't think I will opt for those as they are r compound tires and are really soft and would probably be good for only a few thousand miles on the street as a daily driver. On the track would definitely be a different story. Also, what size front tire Michelin super sport are you running currently?

Another nice thing about the Michelins is the sidewall protects the wheels much better.

Yeah that's definitely a benefit... I'll be the first to admit I'm always a bit on edge when parallel parking or coming up next to a ledge of some sort lol.

I lower the mirror all the way on the side next to the curb. It helps.

I'm surprised I never thought about that... How ignorant of me! I'm gonna try that out the next time I have a chance/ need to parallel park; sounds like it would help out tremendously!

It has really helped me. And after awhile it's second nature.
