So Onstar is free for 5 years on new Chevy Vehicles?

http://www.autotrader.com/car-tech/o...5-years-209222

Apparently 2014 and 2015 you get 5 years free for onstar. Now I put an aftermarket head unit in and never hooked up onstar and to do so I need a 30$ module. Now is it worth it? Is the 5 year free thing real?

I believe it's the onstar mobile app, not the main service. You can lock/unlock but that's about it.

I've got a '14. OnStar expires after six months, but the app works for 5 years. You can use your phone to lock/unlock, remote start your car.

GM gave me two free months on their "three months free" offer. So that five year deal logically only covers 39 months.

My key fob does that - and much faster.

Your key fob can't do that if you are upstairs at work and your car is in a parking garage. The app can start your car no matter how far away it is. It's a nice feature on cold days. Plus, it will show your tire pressure, oil life, gallons of fuel. It's a pretty cool gadget.

Not when you accidentally leave it in the trunk and your doors are locked.

I just purchased a 2015 Impala and the dealer told me you get Onstar premium free for six months, and basic for 5 years.

I guess they are using Onstar as a distraction so you don't see that they are giving you less warranty on the car.

I have been trying to figure out how that all works. Chevy says you get 5 years of OnStar yet OnStar keeps sending me emails that my service is about to expire. If the "free" OnStar is just the app, then that makes sense.

I think I'm going to call them just to get the facts straight. Having the basic service for $14.99 a month might be something I would consider, depending on what you get. Their web site really isn't very clear on that.

It's the phone / website 'remote app' that's free for 5 years, not the safe & sound monthly plans. Actually a nice feature that cost nothing. Remote start, doors and GPS vehicles location on a map to name a few.

I keep my OnStar active from April - Sept (6 months - spring / summer) and suspend it from Oct - March when it's mostly in the garage. I call at the end of Sept and suspend it and coverage will automatically start back up / charging my CC in April.
