Mice Living Under Center Console

Hi, I don’t know if this has happened to anybody, but I thought I would share it. I was removing my center console to replace a damaged vent on the climate control unit when I noticed a mice nest made from the underside carpet fibers under the center console. What should’ve taken an hour took four and a half hours, I had to remove both the passenger and driver seat and all carpets just to make sure there weren’t any mice around, I also wanted to make sure there was no other fecal matter anywhere else besides on the center area. If anybody can tell me what steps to take in the future to avoid another similar situation, I would greatly appreciate it.

If your car sits for a while, use mothballs in a sock.

Quote:
Mothballs can be hung under the front of the hood as a repellant; however be sure to not place near the windshield washer area (where fluid is expelled) or the mothball smell will permeate the interior of the car.

I would keep sticky traps(lots of them)and mouse poison in your garage or where you store your car. I’m not a fan of moth balls because they make everything stink, even when they are outside your car.

I’m not a fan of using poison because the mice can die inside the car.

Here are a few threads about mice:

That’s true. Our pest company at work always said “bait on the outside of the building and trap on the inside”.

I prefer snap traps to glue traps. Not a fan of mice (which are often really voles), but glue traps pretty cruel. The rodents can be released from the glue with about 1 tsp of vegetable oil if you are interested.

I use a glue gun to affix two pieces of dog kibble to a snap trap. Done well, they can't chew or steal the bait without triggering the trap.

LOL….. I think the mice are already around in the Fall. Kill them before they get inside for Winter

Poison and snap traps in the garage. The best poison is from professional pest control. I use snap traps in addition to poison because it seems voles go for the snap traps year round.

Use plastic snap traps, not the old fashioned wire kind. The plastic traps are easy to open and re-use. They have little bait cups, and a tiny drop of honey is the best bait.

I have never used mothballs because who wants that smell in the car?

Put some peanut butter on the snap trap plate. With them licking it off it set the trap off. I use them outside it an old coffee can. They can smell the peanut butter and walk in never come out.

Go to the local pet groomer and get a bag of dog hair, put in cut and small knotted panty hose bags and place around where/what you want them to avoid.

When we park cars in the fall, we put a “moat” of dryer sheets around the car. Can’t say with absolute certainty that it works, but no rodents yet in 5 years.
