3.91 gears on a L99 -> LS3 conversion?

I know the cam loses a lot of its power in the lower rpms, figuring a higher gear will keep it up in the nightfury sweetspot.

Thoughts?

Plans for 416 stroker and CNC ported LS9 heads sometime. Will also supercharge it, but what should I do for the diff?

Yup! Gears are an awesome mod, 391 especially. When it comes to a fat cam, its all about the stall. You need a big converter to match your power band. This will do far more for you car than a set of gears. Or better yet, do both!

I've done the converter actually, it went to a transmission shop for a rebuild...I'm not sure what stall they stuck in the thing though.

All I know is that is is a dual disc converter, and it works well enough.

My cam loves the 391 gears. So does my supercharger.

Stock 6l80s do not like pulling 5th, do it at your own risk. 3.91s will have you doing that a lot. I have a 3.45 diff on the shelf for when my stroker gets here.

You won't like those gears on the street once FI and a stroker. Bye Bye traction. Under 550-600WHP I would say yes! above. No for street, Yes for track.

I've found that the 6l80 is a dog when you want to be near the rpms to go from 5th to 6th. Why is that? Around 2-3k it's hesitating to shift to 6th or something. Might just be my own problem, but yeah 5th gear is horrid.

I don't mind traction too much, honestly. Definitely won't be driving it in the rain though LOL!

It can be embarrassing. I have 3.45's and a Bolt on mustang wanted to play on the highway. well crummy road and I was spinning to 80mph 3rd hooked and I blew past him but spinning sucks when you want to go...

Spinning at 65+ will definitely activate the pucker response every time

I might be mistaken but when you go 3.91s on an L99 don't you basically lose 1st gear due to how short the gear is?
