A10 transmission...

Of all the things this 2020 SS gen 6 has/does better than my previous 2011 V6, this 10 speed transmission is absolutely the biggest game changer. Driving at any speed in every situation I've put the car through so far is just buttery smooth and dreamlike.

I took my mother out for a ride it the new car this afternoon and she went on and on how it didn't feel at all like riding in a sports car because it was so smooth on the road (thank you mag ride) and because the acceleration was just constant with no jerks or hard shifts. She kept comparing to the 2011 I had saying over and over again how much better the riding experience was and she is 76 years old...

If you are on the fence upgrading from a gen 5 to a gen 6 2019 or 2020 with the A10, DO IT! You will NOT regret it! (and get mag ride if you can swing it)

I wonder how much of a difference the A10 is tuned in an SS vs the ZL1?

The A10 is way better than the A8. They got the shudder and slipping bugs out if it. I would never buy anything GM with that 8 speed. 2016-2018 Camaro- get the 6 speed manual, 2019, 2020 get A10 or 6 speed manual.

I love this thing too. I have mostly had M6's all my life but the A10 is the bomb. I had an 18 GT 5.0 with an A10 and it was really good but NO WHERE NEAR as SMOOTH as it GM counterpart. Very different feel. My wife can tell the difference sitting in the passenger seat. I am hesitant to have any tranny tuning done because I dont want to end up where I was with the Mustang. Also, isn't the A10 in the SS its own variant of the A10? I seem to recall the ZL1 and 5.0 got similar ones but I dont know what the difference is.

the ford is the 10r80, the gm is the 10l80.

the zl1 is 10l90, completely different. It's variation spools all but 2 of the clutch packs at any given time, which is why it can not only shift faster, but can skip more gears than the ss/gt counterparts.

Interesting. Man I was way off then. Thank you for chiming in. As I said, I can tell a big difference between the 10R and the 10L. The 10L is much smoother, no where near as abrupt and jerky. And I'm not the only one to note this. Do you know if this is a software/tuning difference between GM and Ford or a hardware difference or both?

from what I can tell, the only hardware difference is the obvious mounting plates.

the differences you feel are literally tune only.

I've not had much seat time in the ss a10 and gt a10 other than a few test drives or riding in friends machines. I personally can't tell much of a difference between the 2. but the difference between those and the zl1 a10 is night and day.

you are talking about "performance shift mode" all it requires is flooring it quickly and you'll go in it, but only in anything sport mode or higher.

try it right before getting off the freeway, your car will downshift to help stop at the light/sign/turn

I usually drive in tour most of the time because our potholes have started to get a little asphalt on them, and the ride gets a bit bumpy.

I agree with the dollar per what you get, that's specifically why I bought my first 6th gen and not anything else.

Stock vs stock 10l80 is better. Tuned 8l90 is better...tuning support is better, it's stronger, and quite frankly the A8 cars are faster in the 1/4mi. ZL1 A10 is a different ball game entirely and the best of all 3.

I had the A8 in my 2017 CTS and it was really good most of the time. It had a noticeably long pause when the pedal was put all the way to the floor for some reason. It was actually dangerous to do on the highway when coming off an on ramp which is when I first noticed it. It also had a hard shift into second when the engine was cold but was fine afterwards. I thought this would go away after I had the tranny fluid changed to the newest spec but it didn't. Other than those issues, it was really good for me.
