GM ZL1 Lap Time Simulations
I'm afraid only an engineer inside GM can answer these questions but it was stated by Al Oppenheiser a few years back that GM runs theoretical simulations of lap times with various tuning parameters. I remember him explicitly stating the M6 ZL1 1LE was estimated to have an optimal lap time at the Nurburgring of 7:13 which Bill Wise achieved unofficially. It would be really cool if GM could disclose these for the ZL1 and ZL1 1LE with both the M6 and A10 transmission configurations.

I find it a tid bit telling they chose the A10 for the ZL1 & manual for the ZLE.
While it’s been several years since each made their runs they most undoubtedly had access to the best of the best 2nd order simulations of the time. Maybe they went 3rd order, but I’d make an educated guess 2nd order was adequate. I agree it would be neat to see the data they gleaned from the software. That’s probably a pipe dream, loaded with the best smoke available, at this point. |
