2017+ TCM unlocking question

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any idea what is changed by HPTuners when they unlock a TCM. I don't need to know how to change it just what is changed.

So my question is does anyone here know what is changed or has anyone looked for a difference between a locked an unlocked TCM. And could you tell me what it is.

Nothing is changed except for the ability to tune it. When it's locked you can not tune it with HP tuners or any other tuning program. Once you send it in HP will unlock it so you can make changes with HP tuners. It's kind of like taking the firewall down so you can get in it.

Yes and that is what I'm asking about. I can get in and change anything I want in the TCM so I'm wondering if anyone knows what to change to unlock it? Because if you go in and come back out its still locked.

I would venture to say if everyone knew what HP Tuners did to be able to break the encryption that would mean others would be able to do it and not have to spend the engineering time, resources and money and would also take away from the HP Tuners business model.

No one other than the HP Tuners engineers know what they had to do in order to break the new GM security encryption. With that no one if going to be able to tell you nor do I think HPT would tell you as they would prefer the automakers not know what they did to break the encryption so the next level of encryption doesnt become hard to break.

How are you "getting in" without it being unlocked?

My friend has access to GM programming software and wiring to connect to it. It very easy to unlock the computer, but it locks again after set number of key cycles which will be annoying while tuning it, so he had figure out how to keep it unlocked which was the hard part, and I have no idea what he deleted to keep it unlocked.

I'm pretty sure they do some manual flashing, so I guess that means they remove it from the board, bench flash and resolder it to the board. I think they use GM TIS web somehow as well when they compute the seed/key. You have to be online and connect with the HP Tuners sever to reflash it.

I would like to know how they are doing it as well.

Well if I were them, I'd keep this info very close to my vest, both for IP protection and because whatever they actually do, it feels borderline illegal and simply being overlooked by manufacturers at the moment, presumably to avoid destroying the aftermarket. Hope they didn't need to do any resoldering on my TCM, though...

Given the A8 issues and the zeroing out slip% tables fix tuners found out, GM is probably just staying mum on the whole thing for now.

If it wasn't for the government, the EPA, liability, and lawyers I think GM would completely open everything up.

I think GM wants the customer to be able to do most things, minus stuff like air bags and other things to minimize liability. They know a lot of the sales come from people who want to make them better and faster.

The EPA has required "security" ever since ODB2 in 1996 so this is not new and it has always been "illegal" to modify your vehicle and drive it on roads that we tax payers pay for. The manufactures then had to implement this security but it is easy to get around. I think GM is doing just enough to satisfy the government and EPA and maybe in some cases intentionally not fixing backdoors in the system.

However, unfortunately this whole situation is changing. With the do gooders pushing this driverless car fantasy we will now see a complete lockdown of all systems. There won't be any more backdoors. If this fantasy happens (which I actually don't think, at least in my lifetime, we will see a true, the way everyone thinks of, driverless car) GM wants to be sure they don't open themselves up to liability.
