Smile EXTREME WINTER FOLKS - Camaro Storage Tips/Products

Hello, I live in Canada and we just got our first drop of snow where I live. Winters get really cold here (-4F). I brought home a 22' SS just two weeks ago and did not purchase winter tires because I don't intend on driving this car at all in the winter.

I will be storing this car in my garage which does get pretty cold, our 2017 Honda Civic's battery kept dying last winter because it wasn't getting a chance to drive during lockdown.

Any tips/products I should know about to ensure the battery doesn't die and the Camaro stays healthy? i.e. a car cover?

I'm totally new at this car stuff.

Thanks in advance!

Plenty of threads on this topic.

Car cover - up to you if you don't want dust on it.

Battery - Hook up a battery tender over the winter and you'll be fine. A good NOCO from Canadian Tire does the job, I use one regularly since I drive mine once a weekish even in the winter.

Welcome from Moose Jaw.

Top the tank off, treat it with stabile fuel treatment. And put a battery tender on it. Should be good to go.

Car cover is optional I would say. I do, but it’s more to keep the kids from scratching going between vehicles with bulky coats and backpacks. lol

Like others have said... Top off the tank, add some Stable, put the battery on a tender. Cover is only needed if you don't want dust to collect.

Battery tender and Sta-Bil are the essentials.

Inflate the tires to 40 psi.

Car cover? What for? You can wash the dust off in the Spring, but moisture under a car cover can cause mildew that is much harder to get rid of.

I recommend pulling the battery from the car and bringing it inside on a battery tender. My brand new 2017 SS battery failed in spring after storing it on a tender in the car. This is in Wisconsin, can get to -20 degrees F inside an I heated garage.

I would also inflate the tires to a few psi less than max rated pressure to reduce flat spotting for a vehicle that will be stored for several months. Tire pressure will drop as temperatures drop.

I personally wouldn't do a car cover, unless you put it on pretty soon after you wash and dry your car. Otherwise, you risk causing scratches as you put the cover on and take it off.

As for battery tender... When I stored mine in a indoor garage some guy was renting, I was able to use the battery tender, no problem. Now that I am in an apartment lot, the strata right now doesn't want me to use the outlet. Ended up writing a long email explaining how little electricity the tender will use so we will see how that goes.

I normally would inflate the tires up a bit, but my tires are pretty much toast so I didn't bother. If your tires are still good then definitely do it.

Little late to the thread but here’s my winter checklist

Winter storage checklist:

Fresh Oil change before storage
Top up fuel & add appropriate amount of Fuel stabilizer (Stabil)
Detail car Inside and out.
Place foam garage mats under tires (non heated garage) & inflate to 40 PSI to prevent flat spots.
Install trickle charger to battery terminals under hood
Indoor car cover on car
Place mothballs around the car/by garage
WALK AWAY AND NO NOT START CAR UNTIL SPRING. Do not start unless you are planning on driving it so the car can get to operating temperature. By not driving, you have a chance of condensation building up and ruining fluids or critical mechanical components.
Deflate tires to recommended PSI and fresh oil change after storage (optional)

You don't really change your oil before you store your car and then again when you get it out do you?

Changing it before has always been a must have for me.

Most cases I don’t change after. Only time I would ever change after is if the oil life monitor is <30%. BUT I have talked to people who say they do regardless. I just threw it on the notes incase somebody was open to the idea of doing it twice.

What for? That brand new pre-storage oil then just sits in your engine throughout the winter for no reason...
