I recently had my Camaro at the tuner for some mystery vacuum leak.


The MSD intake manifold bolts were loose.
- Not the install bolts, the two halves were separating

Some needed torquing...
Some were only HAND-TIGHT...
Snugged everything to spec and running beautiful now.


Moral: CHECK YOUR MSD IM bolts

Just retorqued all of mine after experiencing some rev hang and stuttering at WOT. all is fixed now.

this is my issue this week where i think theyre loose and the car went into limp mode and threw codes, everytime i push the car. i need tighten them as well, this weekend.

agreed this is honestly one of the most garbage products on the market when it comes to reliability and build quality. Performance wise, yes its good, but the way it was built and how things can break so easily within the MSD intake, and how you have to re buy bolts if you take the original bolts out. for something that's $1300. this is a straight rip off.

These are things you should check before install also. Mass production.. Something is bound to be overlooked. Should it for the price? Nope. Glad you found issue before it turned into something worse.

Well i work as an application engineer in a industrial supply company, this kind of thing is put together with some kind of pneumatic or electric tool that has a torque setting on it - more than likely it was a cheaper tool that has a clutch on it that looses its setting as it wears.

So $1300 and no quality control (they should check the torque at least once a shift)

I would have everyone call Holley and ask for a reimbursement policy for the cost incurred and time loss.

Instructions states these need to be torqued in inch lbs. I hand tightened mine

Is there really no other company that makes intake manifolds for our cars or are we stuck with this (not counting those ugly ass hi ram manifolds)?

High ram ugly? Sike! And to answer your question- no.

Your choice is: MSD, Holley, or a fabricated intake that looks similar to the Sniper intakes. Cant remember the name of the company that makes it.

I say "no" as the MSD is about the only one that doesn't require much fabbing or that wont hurt power band for a basic setup as the fabricated intake would on the low end.

GM has the LT2 out, which may or maynot fit. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are a few sheet metal intakes out, they seem IMO too short in runner length

Look the instructions say to torque the small bolts before the manifold is installed, I don't know why but it is clearly in the instructions. Maybe MSD feels that the two haves need to be joined only after the manifold has kind of taken a set from production. Don't beat me up, I installed the manifold 3 years ago, but again I clearly remember the instructions saying the small bolts needed to be tightened. I clearly remember and then disregarding said instructions as their spec was too much for such small blots. I hand tightend my. Your built in hand wrench maybe um less ideal

I figured it instructed you to do this because you would never get to the back bolts once installed.
