Drag Race question

I am seeing some modded SS put up faster numbers than modded ZL1's at similar power levels. Example..saw a SS post in FI section a 9.5 with 760rwhp yet ZL1 seems to be 3-4 tenths slower and there are others. Question is why..I'm thinking weight is similar since they are adding weight doing the mods.

Well, on paper, a "base" ZL1 with manual is supposed to weigh 3885.

While a 1SS weighs 3685.

So, the ZL1 starts with a 200 pound weight disadvantage. If the modified SS has a lighter supercharger and so on, the SS could be significantly lighter than the ZL1 after mods.

I don't know this is the exact reason, but it has to be part of the difference.

I would assume weight is a factor like previously stated but also imagine the SS has a softer suspension making the weight transfer better off the line.

A lot of cars running those times have driver mods' and some those cars are optimized to run at the strip. Every 100-pounds (or about 10-RWHP) represents about a tenth in a quarter mile in these kinds of cars, so an SS that's about 200-pounds lighter will probably be about as fast as the difference you're seeing.

There are lots' of variables though. The numbers above are really rough, and cars running that fast, a lot of the time, are just tuned really well. They might not be optimized, per se (i.e. weight reduction and such), but the combination is just sorted-out.

Weight reduction (not many zl1 owners are doing it), converter, having all the tables unlocked in hptuners for the transmission, the a8, etc

Weight is the big factor for mine ... would also be great to adjust the mag ride front to rear.

Keep in mind LT1 will make more power than LT4 at the same boost level since the compression is higher (11.5). But eventually, us LT1 guys would rather have the LT4 for the forged pistons.

There's no black magic in cars. If a SS is faster than a ZL1, it either has more power or less weight. LT1 engines need pistons to keep up with LT4 bolt on numbers, even at 650-700 RWHP you can start to see the ring lands crack on an LT1. Once you put a Whipple/Magnuson kit on an LT1 SS, you're going to be splitting hairs over weight.

The reason for the SS having a faster record than the ZL1 is probably related to how ZL1 owners tend do 600-1000 HP builds on the stock LT4 engine. Whereas with an LT1, in order to really make it fast, you might as well go for broke and do a 1000+ HP build because you're doing a built engine anyways. Also, easier to justify cutting up a $40,000 car for a turbo kit etc. than a $65,000 ZL1.

Another thing to consider is that LT1 camaros far outnumber LT4 camaros, meaning more end up at the track, more are modded, and therefore they are more likely to post very good times. The population of LT1 cars is much greater than LT4 cars.

The car that you are talking about was listed as having a race weight of 3600lb. Thinking that the ZL1s you've been seeing were running with probably several hundred pounds more weight. The SS starts out lighter than the ZL1, and it's not just the supercharger that makes the ZL1 heavier. Then as the car owner mentioned in this thread, he also did some weight reduction on his modded SS.

Check the 60' times in those comparisons.

Driver mod + track prep and tires makes a big difference.

Other than the blower, I wonder what makes the zl1 heavier than a 2ss? Calipers/rotors & elsd come to mind. What else is there?

They do make a difference for sure, DA and temps are a huge factor for going fast but I ran my best et in low 80 degree temps at the LS Fest at 9.41@146 w/1.35 short time. I ran later in way better conditions but fought traction issues since the car was making more power but did improve my MPH at 149. Some of that was my fault for not making some tune changes and pulling some timing to try to get it to hook. I just kept trying different launch rpms. I did get one pass in that was stellar and ran 5.99@119, the next pass it didn't hook again.

Heavy duty driveshaft and half shafts plus bigger wheels and tires come to mind.
