CAM-C SCCA Club Trials tire recommendation (17 SS 1LE)

For the SCCA Club Trials, in CAM-C, road courses not autocross, for a 200TW set up, would go with a 305/30/19 RE71R (on my ZL1 1LE wheels) or maybe 18” wheels with a BFG Rival-S 315 & 335/30/18 combo? I have heard the Bridgestones are stickier, but would a bit more footprint trump that? I’ve only run on 20”’ G3’s and 19” G3R’s on my 17 SS 1LE. Thanks. [...or what else?]

I run 305s all around, RE71s on time attack events. I only get one lap unless I score a re-run because the guy ahead of me spun.

The rivals seem like they handle a little more heat before they fall off, which is probably beneficial for 2-3 hot laps. I'm not sure how the laps are scored with trials but I would like to try it next season.

You have the two fastest 200 TW tires in your sights though. Anything else will put you in frustration territory.

Most important thing is to make your warm up driving smooth. Save the max attack for the HOT lap.

So I was debating this same thing recently for potentially running in SCCA Time Trials next year. As you said the REs are generally regarded as the quicker of the two by the Corvette guys that run them for Autocross but I imagine that going with the Rivals could be better for road course duty. I really don't have much evidence to back up that claim but I do know that most of the Optima Ultimate Street Car competitors in Camaros and Vettes run the BFGs, and seeing how that completion is a mix of track and autocross I think that's a good example to follow.

Since you already have a set of ZL1 1LE wheels maybe try out the RE71Rs at first and see what you think? The thing to look out for with them is they overheat quicker that the BFGs, but at peak grip they would probably a tad bit quicker.

Everyone I know (whose opinion I respect) that has driven the Rival S on track hasn’t cared for it much. Agreed, for max single lap pace- RE71R is the ticket. Just be dilligent with regard to your install/warmup lap. RE71R’s on heavy cars like ours give their best on laps 2 & 3.

The 20" G3's might not be a bad thing. They are a great tire and seem to last longer into hot sessions than folks I've seen on the RE71R's.

You’re exactly right about the GYs, I tend to get my best times on them towards the end of the session on lap 6-7 believe it or not. The problem with the GYs is they aren’t technically legal in SCCA rule books since they don’t come in enough sizes. They are legal for local/regional events but not National events.

I'm only looking at local / regional. I may get a ZL1 1LE soon as my sons are starting to use the SS 1LE for events. The ZL1 1LE can be run as-is in Super Street local / regional with the 100TW G3R's.

They are legal for CAM-C, I ran them at a National Pro Solo and I checked w/ SCCA first to make sure. The SS 1LE that kicked butt at the recent SCCA National Time Trial was bone stock on Goodyear G3's.

Actually he said he wasn’t even on 200TW tires! And I have read through the proposed 2019 TT rules about 5 times now and can say with 100% certainty that the G3s are not legal (for National Events of course).

He wasn't on 200 TW, because he was on the OEM Goodyear G3's which are 220 TW , he said the car was completely stock, including tires.

Maybe 'Jpdaugherty" can chime in and confirm.

The rule book shows they shouldn't be legal but people, including me, have run them at Nationals events

There is a big difference between the 220tw G3 and the 100tw G3R, that said I just finished off my factory G3R's and have swapped to RE-71's in 305 square. I only have one event on the Stones but they feel great, even though i'm still looking for that magic tire that will make the rear end stick at full throttle.

I have burned through a lot of both G3's and G3R's. Need to try the 305/30/19 RE71R's.

Haha yeah I was running the car showroom stock. Brought a knife to a gun fight and stabbed the guy. Fella who won was in a McLaren MP4 with RE71Rs, consistently 2 seconds quicker than me. I'll be running the same setup as Provost next year, 305 RS4s. If the 2019 events are anything like Nationals there will be plenty of track time. RS4s provide amazing grip and longevity. On my S2000 I was actually significantly quicker on RS4s over RE71Rs.
