[VR] 416ci 5th Gen Camaro SS w/ D1-X makes 838rwhp and 688rwtq!!!!!

Our customer Mike recently contacted us with new goals for his 5th Gen Camaro SS. Mike has been a long time customer with us, and we first started down the road of building this car with forced induction in mind at a later date. A few years back we installed an LS3 based 416ci shortblock using a set of MAST LS7 260cc heads, stock LS7 intake/throttle body, and American Racing longtube headers to generate over 500rwhp on 93 octane fuel. This combination served him well for quite a while both on the street and at local ½ mile events, but the itch for more power was inevitable and he was quickly back in our bay for phase II of his build.

After many discussions of potential combinations, we elected to use the all new Procharger D1-X head unit for this build as it would easily achieve his power goals (which were only ~700rwhp on 93 octane) as well as give a unique focal point for the car at local shows and events. We also knew that the stock clutch would no longer be up to the task, and contacted Monster Clutch for one of their LT1-S triple disc clutches that could easily handle up to 1,000rwhp while still giving a very soft feel on the street where this car would spend most of its time. For fueling, we installed a ZL1 fuel pump in the tank with a set of 1,000cc VR injectors so that converting to E85 down the road was just an auxiliary fuel pump away from happening. Lastly, Mike opted for an AlkyControl dual nozzle methanol injection system to help with safety from the added octane at higher boost levels, as well as assist with cooling at the ½ mile.

The last item to consider was how to put this power to the ground. Mike was previously riding on a set of 20” Niche wheels with street tires that gave the car a clean look, but would simply not be enough with this new power level. For this, we contacted our friends at Forgestar for a set of their new F14 wheels in a 17x10 rear and 18x8 front fitment to accommodate a 325/45/17 drag radial on the rear, but also keeping a 245/50/18 Nitto Invo street tire on the front to add stability in the ½ mile as well as something more friendly on the street than a true skinny. We also installed a set of adjustable BMR control arms to help with wheel clearance and stability in the rear suspension.

Once everything was installed it was time to head to the chassis dyno for final performance numbers. At a very modest 12psi of boost we were able to generate a final power output of 838rwhp and 688rwtq on 93 octane with methanol injection! These numbers were more than Mike could have expected, and the car still behaves very nice on the street. The sound from the race BOV in the Procharger kit is intoxicating and the car now has a look that matches is function both externally and under the hood.

Stay tuned for performance results coming in the near future at our next ½ mile event as well as updated E85 numbers with more boost once Mike gets used to this new power level!
