Question YES! BREAKIN MILEAGE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

I now have a shade under 1,000 miles on my 2021 big V-8, and I’ve followed the rules especially nothing over 4,000 rpm (Well, briefly a couple of times..) and those 455 horses are getting friskier! Engine just seems looser in a desirable way. I’ve also noticed my transmission fluid stays cooler than it did during the first few hundred miles.
Question: Should I change oil and filter at 1,500 miles and what weight oil for the cooler weather? By cooler I mean until mid-November. After that the car will only see service on the occasional mild winter day on dry roads.

Performance manual says 500/1500 (pretty sure LT1 & LT4 are the same), so you are already over due if you want the absolute best break-in procedure.

Rear diff at 1,500 also.

If you put on enough mileage to change filter at 1,500 I’d say do it. It takes almost no time & is cheap (Filter + 1/2qt oil).

When I got my SS the oil monitor was at like 40% or something with 13K miles. The oil looked a lot darker than I liked. Did a change & after the third filter change it was back to almost clear on the second oil change.

Many will tell you a catch can will keep the oil in much better condition as well.

Don’t worry about engine oil being dark, that’s not going to hurt anything (unless it’s dark due to high temps). It’s just carbon. Probably cleaner then the new oil you dump in.

I changed my oil at 500 and now again at 1000 because it has taken me almost a year to get there. I would do your oil sooner rather than later.

You should use the same oil year round. Chevy specifies Mobil 1 0W40 ESP for the LT1.

Be aware that the filter requires a 22 psi bypass that is higher than most.

There are threads about where the best oil price can be found and also about filters.

If the oil life monitor is still showing that there is a lot of good life left in the oil, I'd change just the filter myself and top the oil level off.

If nothing else, the rest of your first oil change interval will be working with a cleaner filter . . . and I'd still be tempted to do the first full oil change a bit sooner than as determined by the monitor.

Yes the engine will break in even more with more miles and run stronger it seems. My ZL1 was that way and the 2016 2SS was that way too. My old 2010 LS3 really woke up after break in miles were over and ran a lot better. Use the recommended oil weight for your Camaro and go by the oil change intervals listed in the owners manual.
