Wheel weights
I just had some new tires installed on my SS and after I bought the car home I noticed they had placed wheel weights on each rim. I never noticed wheel weights when I had the stock tires. Are they supposed to be left on? They look awful. Its as if they placed them where they would be the most visible.

The wheel weights are necessary due to fabrication tolerances to ensure that your wheel with the tire are 100% balanced. Other wise you will have massive vibration.

If they used the clamp on style weights on the edge of your rim take it back, demand they use the type that stick on the inside, and if they damage your rims tell them they're responsible because they should know you do NOT use clamp on weights on Low profile rims.

Here is a picture of one of the wheels. The weights are placed like that one all 4 wheels. It wasn't like that when it was stock im sure. |

If your stock tires were in better balance than the new tires or better matched to the unbalance of the wheels, they wouldn't have required as much weight.
It might have been possible to rotate the new tires around on the rim to find a position that didn't need as much weight, but you'd probably have to get an agreement with the tire guy to make the extra effort. Although if your tires have match-mounting paint spots on them the tire tech should have known how to orient the tire on the rim for a minimum-weight balance. Otherwise, it is what it is, and good balance doesn't know or care about anybody's appearance preferences. I suppose you could mask around the weights and spray-paint or plasti-dip them black to make them less noticeable . . . that's about all I can offer that won't cost you money for another wheel balancing job that might not come out a whole lot better. I bought some enamel from Walmart, taped around the weights, then brush painted them black. Up close the paint job is meh but the weights are much less noticeable now.

I will say this about the tire tech - on that wheel at least, he didn't do all that great of a job getting the string of weights aligned with the plane of wheel rotation.

Thanks for the info everybody. I guess I'll just plastidip them black and make them
less noticeable. I can't stand any chrome looking pieces on my car. |
