Some idiots will fall into this, but this is an alarming idea. You wouldn't actually own your car, if the car get's older you still have to pay your monthly rates for things to work. And anybody with a bit of technical background can garantuee that once they turn off older connection types or servers, and that definitely will happen, you will lose these functions permanently.

As a fact Chevrolet turned off the OnStar service in Europe a few years ago for all the connected features like the weather app, so all Camaros here just have these dead features now.

I remember when I was looking at gaming consoles a few years ago (yes I know I'm not sophisticated enough to do PC gaming) the arrogance of Microsoft to say that they didn't care that players couldn't play on their console without internet access is essentially what drove me to Playstation. We've always been at the mercy of big business. I wouldn't be surprised if autonomous driving is being held up right now because someone is trying to figure out a way to monetize it. But I digress, to our corporate overlords, please forgive my digressions.

I love torque and the sounds of rumble and pop….
EV gives lots of torque, and an aftermarket gear ratio swap will help shred enough tires that we’ll feel like Rockefeller lighting Cubans with $100 bills.
For the sounds…. EV are too quiet. For “Safety reasons” we will need external speakers, so pedestrians can hear us…. like now…LOL Bose woofers and mid range will suffice.. Then the computer senses rpm and torque applied and it sends the sound to the street. The driver selects the mode…lol….tour, sport, track. Or, like the Borla website, select what you want it to sound like. For me, I want it to sound like the Pontiac SD455 with a tall cam, and headers and glass packs…and I’m sure a few out there want it to sound like an Ford escort with a 10 gallon trash can bolted to the tail pipe.
My Tesla will have 4.11 gears, and I’ll have to stop at every charging station to fill up. You’ll hear me coming Karen….Safer this way..
Change is good, if you adapt.

Ran across this article recently. This Vietnamese company is planning to build an EV plant here in the Raleigh area. Wonder how long it will take other manufacturers to adopt this business model? Pay $40-50k for the car then have to lease the battery for $35/mo for 310 miles then $0.11/mile after that or pay $110/mo unlimited use for the base model vehicle. Even more for the bigger model.

I attended their press conference at NYIAS. This is something they do in their home market and they’re looking to extend it here. Renault tried this in Europe several years ago. Don’t think they’re still doing it, so there’s that.

Here's why you won't ever own your EV. Another reason to just say no.

Alas, this model is coming to everything dominated by software, not just cars. Not an easy problem to adequately solve, I must admit, even when there is a will to do so.

Yeah, they really destroyed their reputation in a second and it took so many years to get that back.

I honestly don't like how many people fully invest into subscriptions. They don't buy a copy of a movie, show, music, videogame, etc. "I just pay my $10 per months per subscription, it's cheaper!". But the moment you stop paying you end up with absolutely nothing. I love having my huge collection of blurays/dvds that grew over so many years, having my collection of old videogames, or even my digital huge folder of mp3s.

And we all know the cases where movies get recut, songs get censored, videogames were removed from market places because of being not socially acceptable anymore or lincensing problems.

I really don't want that in a car. And I will never buy a car that will be based on subscriptions.

So we can continue to buy and own new Camaros, they’ll just be soulless turds with all the fun squeezed out of them and replaced by little politically correct electrons?

Isn’t this kind of like ‘we had to destroy the village to save it?’

No thanks.

sounds like what we all said in 1971 with increasing emissions standards, lower horsepower, and safety bumpers coming in 1972.but would you really want to race a stock 71 camaro against its modern equivalent? time will tell if they are soulless 4 door turds or not.

Lol, I really got into a deep discussion with a buddy of mine about buying 4K blu-ray discs vs just streaming online content. I felt that a physical disc just had a cleaner look to it. I actually even loaded up Planet Earth II for him on my LG C1 and I could tell that he was clearly impressed, but not enough to admit that it looked a tad bit clearer (I have fiber but there will always be small hiccups in the data transmission that aren't as regular with the equipment in your hands).

I have already experienced issues with "subscription service" goods. I remember buying some music from Music match Jukebox (yes, I'm aging myself here) and them going under shortly thereafter. I couldn't play any of my music on any other platform. And sure, they have made improvements to digital content/services, but I still prefer having physical access to items I paid for.

Probably the craziest application in the auto industry has to be them trying to charge you per use for heated/cooled seats. Sadly though, I can see some younger generations being ok with this type of business model.

So a car becomes a “soulless turd” simply because it doesn't make vroom vroom sounds?

I don’t look at the Taycan or eTron GT as soulless and if you a car person you wouldn’t either.

You probably haven’t read anything about the AMGs either would be my guess.

I just find it funny that somehow people assume or try to portray that an EV will be a Leaf or a Bolt when they can be and are so much more.
