I opened the base and the midcoat of the wheel paint. The base is black like someone else said the mid coat is a silver metallic/ clear mix . This is PPG. Other paint manufacturers may have have it in a two stage formula but I have not looked into that.

Anyone ever find the right color and code number for base ZL1 wheels? Looks like from thread WA375 is for ZLE. Got a scratch on one of mine.

WA375a After midnight Its a Black base with the aftermiddnight being a candy type paint application. It goes over the black and then clear. I had wheels painted recently and watched the process.

There is no paint code, The wheels are powder coated with graphite powder and resin over a black base coat then baked in an oven. Paint alone is not durable and will not last.

Funny enough, I chipped one of my rear wheels in my first 2 weeks of ownership, my grandpa had a Chevy Tahoe in a Storm Gray color, he had some touch up paint laying around (WA391E) and it was close enough for me to touch up the chip.
It was close enough nobody ever notices the chip unless it’s pointed out. Just a thought to try? |

I scrubbed a curb with my right rear wheel(just a small place)and a mobile alloy wheel repair company fixed mine good as new! That would be my suggestion to the Op to get it repaired as those companies can do miracles with damaged wheels and most if not all will tell you if they can or can’t repair the wheel!

I wonder if anyone powder coated their wheels mosaic black... might go that route if chips keep happening.

I would imagine, like others will, I found this thread out of need to touch up a non-1LE ZL1 wheel. Wanted to let others know what I did as this thread can be a little confusing.
Backstory: was being stupid trying to get the car into my garage from a non-traditional approach angle after changing the oil, cut the front wheel too hard and "curbed" it against the side of my garage frame, which is wood, which is good, because it caused no actual damage to the wheel metal, but did put a scuff in the paint (and of course, some of the white paint from the wood transferred). So I bought the AC Delco 19367655/Son Of Gun/Nightfall Grey/WA139X paint that is referenced in this thread. Had pretty good luck with it, see pic below where I highlighted the approx 2" scuff area on the face of the outer rim (sorry, no "before" pics). This is after 1 very thin coat, I may go back and try a 2nd thin coat. I'm happy with it, and I was ready to take it to a professional if this didn't work out (I am that picky on this car) A couple of notes: 1. I actually found a tiny ding on one of the spokes (not from curbing it) where material had been removed, it was black, meaning it looks like it took out the paint, but not the primer. Tried a little drop on it and it did NOT look good, so I wiped it off. 2. Because I didn't actually remove material from the rim when I curbed it, my guess is that repair with this color paint looks better than if someone tries to use it on a "chunk" taken out, just my 2 cents. 3. I know I need to wash it, ignore the brake dust! (area of repair is clean) Hope this helps others. |
