Carbon Interior: Gloss To Satin

Ever since I installed the first carbon piece in the car, I wasn't 100% happy with how the gloss stands out in the car. Don't get me wrong it looks 1000x better than stock, but to me it looks more aftermarket than OEM than I would prefer.

Removed all the carbon from the car without issue with a plastic pry tool, but the radio surround was a PITA to get off. Everything has been installed for 6 months. Scuffed everything with 600, wiped down and sprayed with a 2 part 2K satin.

This was the easy part though, now I have to reapply all the tape, lol. I plan to use either 3M VHB or 468MP.

Hope to get it all back in the car this weekend.

Hmm, these are looking amazing, much better than the high gloss surfaces, fantastic job Can't wait to see the before and after, hope you'll be able to post up some interior pics soon.

Thanks! Always wanted to try satin over carbon and after seeing it, I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to gloss.

Hoping to get them retaped and back on the car this weekend. I had forgotten how much silver was in the car.... and how annoying it can be when the sun hits it just right. Pictures in the car will definitely be posted.

Looks beautiful. I was actually thinking about buying some tasteful carbon pieces for the interior but the gloss always detracts me from doing so. I'm horrible with sanding and painting

Satin is the way to go on these bits. Nice work.

Thanks! I'm happy with the outcome and like you, exactly how I imagined and hoped. To me, totally worth the effort to remove and redo. Anything that is gloss carbon I purchase for anything from here on out will have to get redone in satin, lol, but true.

I attempted to take pictures with doors open in the sun, doors closed and in the garage with the interior light on. Angle car was parked for nice pictures in the sun was wrong, but will try to get some better ones.

Before I started this, I knew removing and replacing all the tape was going to be the worse part... I wasn't wrong, lol.

Clearing these in satin has gotten me motivated to finish up the carbon interior. With the boomerangs, they were hit/miss if they were in stock when I'd think to check. Got lucky Saturday night and saw Next-Gen had some in stock. I dug around a little on the site before ordering to see if maybe there was something new... Sure enough there was, the gauge surround trim so added it too

Looks real good man. Would you tackle the oem dash piece the same way?

Absolutely would, I think it would look alot more at home in the car vs gloss.

After driving with the satin carbon, I love it. BUT in hindsight if I was to do it again, I would consider a matte clear. Would hide the carbon pattern more, but I think would look a little better.

You got me thinking now. I don’t like it when things are flashy or overdone. The glossy carbon I feel can be taken too far. This route that you took helps with the flashyness of both the aftermarket carbon pieces and the factory silver ones, especially when the sun hits it. Essentially it’s a good balance.

Are you going to do something with your silver door panel pieces?

Thanks and completely agree, everything just blends better.

After installing these, that same night I finally ordered the door boomerangs. I also discovered they make the gauge surround now so ordered one too. Will have them today and hope to get them recleared this weekend. Pictures to come, this should be the last parts of my interior that's silver.

Now that's how the carbon fiber should look. Amazing job and thanks for the post. Definitely want to try this out.

What paint did you use? And did you just do one light coat or a couple coats?

This is what I used, but the only downside is that it's a 2pt clear so does have a pot life once it is mixed.

Initial coat was lightest, medium coat(s) and the last was the heaviest coat. I believe I ended up with 4 coats total and had some left over in the can. If I was to do them plus the boomerangs and gauge surround at the same time it may have been cutting it close.
