The rear tail lights have a DOT number on them and they are a OEM part...

Correct. All he had to do was look at the red reflectors in the bumper.

Also, you can spot the "DOT" marking molded into the taillight lens to assure legality.

Your Taillights should have a US Federal DOT stamp or indication on them, somewhere. That DOT insignia means those are legal for DOT use in all 50 States, because they meet the legal requirements for proper lighting per Federal Standards. GM gets around the reflective taillights by removing the reflector from the tail light and using the RED reflectors at the bottom of the facia. The taillights can not be reflective, because the lens is not RED in color when they're not on. Any rearward facing reflector, by law has to be RED. Outward or forward facing has to be AMBER in color. You are golden on this, the Officer with all of his good intentions might not be aware of the exact details.

Did you get a written warning for the taillights? If so, you need to go to the station and get it removed from your record if the police in your state file them. In some states, warnings go into your permanent record and will show up when you get stopped again, which can affect the officer's opinion of being a scofflaw.
