Exclamation GM Dark/Clear Tail Lights; sleek and stylish, but are they legal??

Recently I got pulled over for 'no' front license plate. And the cop took a look at my GM Dark/Clear Tail Lights and gave me a 'warning' because they weren't reflective. I was under the impression that this tail lights were approved by DOT? I'm in Texas.

I’m pretty damn sure the head lights nor tail lights are required to be reflective. Reflectors are required, to which the car has on the sides, front and back, and at the CHMSL and rear fascia. A manufacturer can elect to incorporate them into the lights, though.

I thought the clear portion was reflective anyway, no?

They are original equipment on the redline edition and probably some others.

Yes, they're OEM on Redlines, Hot Wheels and ZL1 1LE.

This link from chevrolet.com states they're street legal.

Call on the cop if it happens again.

I'm pretty sure reflectors on the rear are a federal law, but the requirement is met by the reflectors near the exhaust tips. I think auto manufacturers have the option to make it part of the taillight assembly or separate it, which the Camaro team did.

Yes they’re legal in TX, and every other state.

Per the DPS (Texas Department of Public Safety), pursuant to Texas Transportation Code § 547.322.

“Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with at least two tail lamps, unless vehicle was manufactured prior to 1960, in which case your vehicle is required to be equipped with one (1) tail lamp mounted on the rear which, when illuminated, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of 1,000 feet to the rear.”

And unless you totally removed your side reflectors, pursuant to Texas Transportation Code § 547.325.

“Every motor vehicle shall carry on the rear, either as part of the tail lamps or separately, two or more red reflectors.

Rear reflectors on a vehicle shall reflect a red color.

Red reflectors required on the rear of a vehicle may be incorporated with the tail lamp assembly.

Every reflector upon any vehicle shall be of such size and characteristics and so mounted as to be visible at night from all distances within 600 feet to 100 feet from such vehicle when directly in front of the lawful lower beams of head lamps.”

Your vehicle is complaint with all Texas lighting laws, and the laws for any other state in the country.

As you see above, your tail lights do not need to be reflective or have a reflector. The reflector is located separately which is perfectly fine.

Officer was just giving you a hard time because you were missing the front plate. I’m sure if he felt like you were violating lighting laws he probably would’ve wrote you a citation for it.

This is worded almost exactly the same as in CT. The bold part shows that it IS illegal to get those clear reflector replacements that some vendors have.

I could be wrong but I think you are thinking of the running lights on sides and not the reflectors on the rear bumper below the tails. Dont see people replacing those reflectors, just the side running lights. Again, I could be wrong

Nope I mean the rear reflectors, here is an example of the product:

https://wildhammermotorsports.com/ca...rs-wildhammer/

Based off ecko's Texas definition, and my knowledge of the Connecticut ones, running lights on the side normally have the letter of the law say "running lights must reflect OR display *insert proper color here*" which is why you can get away with changing them legally, but the rear reflectors specifically say "must reflect red". No option to reflect another color.
