ZL1 is in a different league for track performance. BMW is more refined for daily duties. But no modern M car has been good out of warranty (E46 M3, E92 M3, E60 M5 and each successor M5).

Why does NO ONE ever mention the cost of the ZL1 - EVERY car its compared to are $100K plus cars....a M5 is a $120K. For me, when shopping for ANYTHING, Cost is a MAJOR factor in my decision.

Because there's honestly not much that can compete with the ZL1 at its price.

not much.... theres nothing that compares, HP per dollar, Track capabilities.

Like the OPs Friend thought process, I could get a M5 or I can get (2) ZL1 for me and my wife. Or a ZL1 and Buy a cheap house. It a no brainer - well I guess I am a little bias - and BROKE, cause I for sure cant afford a $120K car

resale value for bmws are terrible in my experience. I lost the most I have ever lost on any vehicle by far on a Bmw X5 Msport Diesel SUV in an suv market. Based on that alone I will never buy another Bmw period. Cars are not an investment by any means and I expect to lose money on every one but Bmw took the cake.

I said not much but the Corvette C8 competes very well against the ZL1, of course assuming you can find one at MSRP. The Shelby GT500 competes very well with the ZL1 and is only a few K more if you can find one at MSRP. The C8 and GT500 prices will come down next year since this year was the first year for both so the ZL1 does have SOME competition in this price range, just not much as I stated.

I should clarified he is shopping certified pre-owned - they can be had in the mid 70k to low 80k range (and I've seen them in the low 60s, just not certified with warranty). As others have said, M car values drop like a rock

My friend drove me in his ‘13 M5 to the dealer when I bought my SS. Now he has a 2020 M5. Exhaust sound is neutered. Car is nice, fast, refined. But it was boring as hell to me. ZL1 or SS all the way.

Other thing it’ a very difficult to bring more power on a M5... on a zl1 you can bring easily 200 hp more... you’ll never put this in a M5 cause it’ s nearly impossible with m5 program and engine

I know it's a different M car but I drove and considered a M2 Competition when I bought my SS. The SS was more exciting to me both driving and looks-wise. When I read about the BMW reliability issues, from both national review organizations and the BMW forums, walking away was easy. I don't even care if it's under warranty. If it's in the shop all the time, then I'd be paying for something I'm not driving. And, as mentioned before, the general maintenance expense is insane!

Based on what? They crank up the boost to 25+ psi with flash tune, water injection and/or E85

That’s a HUGE selling point. Because both cars are SEVERELY underpowered.

Others don’t think like that.
