ECU Swap

I have a 2017 Zl1 I want to get tuned.

Is it possible to purchase a secondary ECU that I can swap into the car and get tuned while keeping the stock ECU untouched? That way if anything goes wrong I can swap back to stock and there won't be a raised flash counter.

Just curious.

Anyone have any ideas on this. That's a good question.

Yes. Discussed this with Cunningham at one point. Really the ONKY way to ensure a dealer will never know you had a different tune flashed. Let us know what they cost when you find it. Surely $$$$$$$!!!!!

If this is it, it looks like the part number is 12674052. It says it's $184 and a special order piece.

The description reads: "Description: Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade. Suburban, Yukon XL. Escalade ESV. Corvette. Camaro. XTS. All. 4.3L. 5.3 & 6.2L. 6.2L supercharged. Sierra, silverado. With turbocharger. 3.6L, 3.6L twin-turbo, with twin-turbo, labeled 12672537."

Based on that I would assume that's the one for the 17 zl1 also.

Available on Amazon, RockAuto, etc. Question is how do you get it programmed?

Apparently the dealer can do it. Only question is if they program it, does it save the computer id in their database.

That would mean the next time they plug into the car they look for the new computer id but instead see the old one. It may raise some red flags.

Not sure if that's the case or not.

You can buy a new ECM from rock auto. They have them in stock. I’ve replaced one already, it cost around $300 IIRC. I had a dealer flash it to stock, brought it home and flashed my ProCharger tune into it. I have my stock one that may or may not be bricked sitting in the box.

If you buy another ECM, you can have them flash it under customer pay and it doesn’t get tracked like warranty work.

You would then have two that you can do as you please....you can also tune both with HPTuners since you have the VIN licensed. It’s basically the expensive way of cloning and ECM.

IF you havent tuned your car yet can you just buy a new computer and replace your ECU with that one and have your tuner flash a tune onto it, and never actually touch the OEM ECU?

Can they bench flash the new ecu or does the car have to be there to do it?

This would be awesome if my dealer will do this.

Car needs to be there. I trailered it over and then we took the blower belt off to reload it. Literally took 30 minutes. Should be quicker if yours is still 100% stock. Put the new ecm before you get there. IIRC the dealer charged me $130 for the flash. It was definitely reasonable since the shop that bricked my ECM wouldn’t do anything for me, but that’s a whole other story.

What about mileage? Isn't that stored on the ECU? Will the dealer be able to see the different mileage?

The mileage is stored elsewhere. When I did mine, it rolled in with the new, unflashed ecm and when it pulled out the mileage was correct.

I have been wrong before but the way I understand it is you can not have 2 ecms and switch between them, the vehicle will not start on one of them.

If the dealer Syncs one the other becomes unusable.

They have security key that must be synced to all other modules in the car.

Ted.
