Rear Fluid change question

I drained the factory rear gear fluid out and refilled with freah GM fluid. Strange that a little less than a quart drained out but it took 1.3 qts for it to run out of the refill hole. Is this normal? BTW there were fine metal shards on the refill plug but not the drain plug. Seems to be a heavy grease put on the plug at the factory to catch the particles.

I don't remember how much came out when I drained mine but I can tell you that I filled until fluid came out of the fill hole and I have been fine ever since. I can see how the metal shavings would get churned to the top and stick to the magnet on the fill plug.
