GM Announces It Will Go 100% Electric

General Motors has made the announcement it plans to go 100 percent electric earlier this week, according to NBC News

The goal is to abandon the internal combustion engine entirely. At some point in the future, all of its products will draw power either from batteries or hydrogen. Last year, all forms of electrified vehicles accounted for not even 3 percent of the U.S. new vehicle market so the question now is will consumers accept this change?

No way will this happen soon. You can expect to atleast see 1 more gen of Camaro/vette with gas engines. Actually, for the transition they may offer a gas and fully electric camaro. With the electric being slightly faster 0-60.

Bad reporting.

Saying that GM will be going all-electric is not the same as saying all GM cars will be electric. What it means is that in the world of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, all-electric, and fuel cell electric, GM is placing its biggest bet on all-electric.

There will still be ICE vehicles. There will still be hybrids. There will still be plug-in hybrids. There will even be a few fuel cells. But the emphasis will be on vehicles that are all-electric.

This is not a statement that all vehicles will be electric.

Quote from GM's press release:

GM's plan includes two new all-electric production vehicles for the US market in the next 18 months.

Hopefully they switch to hydrogen for sports/muscle cars. Leave electricity for the grocery-getters, GM.

A lot of folks at Tesla, Faraday Future, and NextEV would disagree with you and bring hardware to prove it. All make at least one vehicle that does 0 - 60 in 2.5s or less. Google Tesla S P100d, Faraday Future FF91 and Nio EP9 for details.

Just do not see Electric being the future. The electric grid is not even close to supporting a major or minor % change to electric cars.

Just for the record...in a hydrogen fuel cell, the hydrogen isn't "burned" to create power. The hydrogen is involved in a chemical reaction with ammonia compounds to produce electricity, with water emissions as the byproduct. So it is essentially an electric car, but with the electricity coming from reformulating hydrogen instead of from a plug.

Besides cars going all electric it'll be quite awhile to get all the charging stations in place so you won't have to worry where to charge up on long trips!

Tesla has already done it for their vehicles. BMW, Volkswagen, and Nissan have already done it on the east coast (I-95 corridor) and the west coast for some of their vehicles and are working on mid-southeast states now. All the major German automakers (BMW, Mercedes, VW Group) are collaborating on building super-fast charging stations (80% of a full charge in 20 - 30 minutes) across Germany and other areas in Europe.

Since most EV drivers will charge at home 90+% of the time while we stop at gas stations, charging stations will only be needed for 300+ mile drives. And since very few people do that more than about a dozen times a year, you don't need as many public chargers as you do gasoline stations. Tesla figured that out a long time ago.
