I just had this very same dilemma, myself. I went back and forth quite a bit. I ultimately decided that the 16 would be wiser for me. I like the improved interior a lot. It does look and feel a little smaller (my 14 1LE felt huge, but it didn't really bother me). I think the ATS platform just makes the 16 a much nicer vehicle overall.

I do see the argument for the ZL1 though too. They look SO menacing and they are monsters right out of the box. Tough one...

All the best,

I toyed with the idea of a 2SS vs a 2015 Z28 for a bit, performance is almost identical, but the interior and extra bells and whistles (let alone about 10K cheaper price) made it an easy decision and I have no regrets!

Good luck!

I was in your same shoes, I was very undecided between a '14-'15 ZL1 VS the 6th. gen SS, at the end all the information that I read of Stingrays and new GM pickups having issues of overheating with the new engines and A8 transmission doing wrong unsafe shifts (and also not recommended for the track because overheating reasons). I read complains by their owners on the forums and the two Stingrays on C&D test that had their engines replaced, I did not want to be a lab rabbit for the new 6th. Camaro that has the same powertrain, instead I went for a ZL1 with very low 1K miles at 45K completely loaded with Recaros. I read all the comments of their owners and they were completely in love with their ZL1's with well tested powertrains lasting many hard driven miles without problems. Also did not trusted that GM lower their warranty with their new vehicles to 60,000 miles instead of the original 100,000, that does not sound right.
The actual ZL1 is a great looking muscle car, that now is part of the "legend" of great cars, and the new 6th. gen Camaro looks like a more euro sport car that handles great based on the reviews and very light on weight, but the cabin is very thight specially in the back, that now has a worthless rear seat that nobody would be able to use maybe just chimps or for cargo. I parked my ZL1 beside a new white SS 6th. gen and there was no contest it looks smaller and only the front and sides looks great, the plastic hood vents look like they came from cheap materials, they look better in the magazines, my expectations were higher on the 6th. gen besides the great handling and lower weight that were great moves by GM on the right direction, with lower lap times at the track compared to the great 1LE.
Now you know what I chosen and don't have any regrets I love my ZL1 like many other owners.

I agree the interior layout and such is better in the 2016, but what creature comforts exactly are people talking about that the 2016 has over a 2013 ZL1? Apple CarPlay?

Cooled seats, push button start, memory seating, more comfortable seats, wireless phone charger, better MyLink screen and bigger, lighted door dills, customizable ambient lighting, lane assist/departure, ect... Once you sit in the 2016 and play with all the features it's night and day over a 2015.

It's just personal preference but once you sit in a 2016 and play with the new interior features our 5th gens seem so old school.

I have the extra creature comforts in my 2014 Impala and when I drive my Camaro I am looking for the extras.

Assuming we're comparing a 2SS, the 2016 also gets ventilated seats and automatic climate control.

I would chose the 2016 2SS. The 5th gen interior already felt dated when I was looking to buy one in 2012. After having a few cars with the smart key/push button option, I would never buy another car without it.

Is this thread dead? I'm in a predicament. I own a 16 2SS. Love it. My baby. I came across a 13 ZL1 optioned how I would want it for 44 out the door. I absolutely wouldn't get rid of my 16. My question is, would it be smart to own Both? Pros & tons? My 16 isn't my DD and while I'm no fan of the interior, it's much easier to accept, given it will my 3rd car and pretty much a big toy for me. Thoughts? I would love the insight.

Pros=more toys. Cons=more cost.

What is your goal? I feel the cars are too similar for a toy to have both. I would want something different to change up the driving experience. I would probably have a Camaro SS and something like a Miata as a 2nd toy for a dramatically different experience depending on the mood I am in.

Maybe you can make the 2016 SS your daily driver and the ZL1 can be your 1/4 mile project car or something.

First! Thank you for th reply! I'm not into nodding at all. Just me. I'm a "as is" kind of person. Moddig is out. I test drove the Z for about 90 seconds (sucks, I know) but I didn't get a completely different feel then from what I have now. I wanted 580HP to blow me away. It was nice but I didn't get that initial reaction I was looking for. Then again, he only let me drive up the block and make a U-turn. I'm sure I need more time with the car to get a true feel for it. Every time I look at it, I'm in awe of it. So beautiful. Makes me want it so much. Stuck!!!!! I wanted that car since they announced it in 2011. I have the funds now to get it but I'm not sure if it's the best bet, especially being I just bought the 16 in January.

Yeah, performance wise they are fairly similar. You have to remember you are gonna need 580hp to move that 4200lbs. That goes to show you how much weight reduction does for performance. I like the ZL1 but I would not like it more than the new interior, tech, LT1, quick shifting A8 and 400-500lbs lighter weight. The lighter weight of the Gen6 enables it to change direction much quicker and it just feels a lot more nimble. I also like that the gen6 is smaller and more sporty on the inside. It feels like a sport coupe now instead of a muscle car. I couldn't do it because I just feel like you are going backwards in technology, don't get so hung up on 580hp since you just experience that it really is no faster than what you have.

Once you get into these high horsepower ranges the car has to offer more than just raw power. Maybe get a convertible to add some new dimension to the driving experience....

That's exactly why I wouldn't trade in my 2016 for a 2013 ZL1. I figured it would be filling a dream and also something of a toy to play around in. Not mod, but just enjoy overall playing with sometimes. The perfomance being so similar is what makes me go HMMM! Am I better off just saving the cash and just continue enjoying what I have or spring for it and have two Camaros.
