Rear Differential fluid change today.

I am going to change the rear differential fluid today. Manual says 1.6 qts so I purchased 3 from Amazon. GM LS gear oil 88862624. Ordered them prime yesterday at 3pm and they were on my doorstep early this morning.

Make sure you have a fluid transfer pump, or whatever you want to call it, on hand. You're not going to get that bottle or a funnel anywhere near the fill hole (if it is anything like the SS). I just filled it until it ran out the fill hole, but based on what is left in the 2nd bottle...1.6 quarts is probably about spot on.

Why did you purchase 3? 64 oz = 2 qt.

Because I have learned not to trust certain capacities. I didn't want to be stuck without enough fluid.

I forgot to post about this fluid change. It is the easiest fluid change possible. Anyone that pays the dealer $100 to perform this task must not be able to change a lightbulb. Once you get under the car, the drain is staring you in the face on the differential. Use a 3/8” socket extension or the 3/8” socket wrench to loosen the drain plug. The fill is on the driver’s side and a transfer pump is not necessary. You can put a nipple with a small section of rubber hose and squeeze the bottle. The drained fluid looked much better than the previous Gen 5 ZL1 at 1500 miles. No metal on the plug magnet either. The capacity is correct at 1.5-1.6 qts.
