Could The New Motor Be:

Several high end car manufacturers are building 4L twin turbo V8 engines. This includes Bentley, AMG and Ferrari. These motors are designed from turbocharging from the start and produce 500 or more horsepower. The driver behind the 4L displacement is China has an extremely high displacement tax at 4L and above.

If the new engine is going to be DOHC it might be on the big side at 6.2L. Besides, GM might want to sell the next Corvette in China or other markets with displacement taxes. Such a motor has much lower fuel consumption than a high revving NA V8 of 5L or more.

Just a thought...

GM is never going to sell Z/28s in anything resembling a decent volume outside of North America. They don't sell (and seemingly have no interest in selling) Camaros in general in large numbers outside of the US & Canada. Everywhere else it occupys a tiny niche. The Z/28 itself fills a small niche in the Camaro lineup. So what would be the point in developing an engine that would be worse in the market that would represent 99% of sales just to lower the taxes on it for the other 1%?

Besides, if the goal is to save people money why increase the cost of the engine by ~$10,000? In Germany, for example, from what I can read on it the displacement tax on a 6.2L engine would be 124 euros, per year. Thats $132 at the moment. Not sure what the Chinese version of the tax is but I doubt its substantially worse than Germany. Paying substantially more up front, just to make the ownership costs marginally less for the next ~20 years makes no sense whatsoever.

Also ... GM probably cares less about the Z/28s fuel economy than they do its sales overseas.

China's displacement tax is on 3.0 L and larger.

European companies are downsizing and turbocharging to minimize CO2 emissions.

We can all keep guessing but the only ones that know are GM and it seems they are in no rush to tell us.

I would disagree about the higher fuel economy of a smaller FI engine compared to a larger NA V8. I realize that this isn't exactly an "apples to apples" comparison but I think it is close. The potential for improvement exists but I don't think we see the higher fuel economy of smaller FI engines in the real world yet.

People seem to forget, the fuel economy comes from the smaller displacement and the turbos just put the performance back in the engine. However if you stay in the boost your fuel economy drops dramatically.

True. I prefer GM's active fuel management (AFM) approach of taking displacement out for fuel economy. 6.2L for performance dropping to 3.1L to get economy.
