How to make my black top more black?
We just picked up our new 22 convertible and the top looks a little faded. I'm guessing chevy had it sitting awaiting parts for awhile this summer. I have seen some "restoration paint" stuff but I don't want to ruin my new top. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

The black isn't super dark. It has a greyish look against my black car.

The fabric top is more of a dark charcoal than a hard black. Almost any fabric will reflect some diffuse light and appear "lighter" than specular gloss black paint. So "it's normal." However if it's a fading in patchy spots, then yeah something's wrong.
A good sealing fabric guard coating (Raggtop or 303) might help darken the fabric a bit to improve the look and all the other obvious benefits. I used 303, see here: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...5#post10171125 If you look at the photo in that post, you can see quite a bit of fuzz and dust... so yeah "Charcoal" is a feature The car was dirty at the time (garage queen dust). A good lint-rollering will remove a lot of dust and darken it up quite a bit (make sure you do this thoroughly before using a sealant!). EDIT: But if you seriously want it dyed darker, talk to an automotive upholsterer BEFORE you apply the sealant. Last edited by Gunkk; 11-16-2022 at 07:32 AM. |
