somebody needs a lawyer
I'm assuming that this took place in CA, and I don't know for sure if you can use radar detectors there (probably not). I never take my SS out without a Valentine One. Never been stopped using it.

Waze depends on the userbase. In a lesser populated area it will be next to useless, but in more trafficed areas it will absolutely beat radar detection

That speed here in Virginia will guarantee you a couple of months in jail. Like OP said get yourself a nice Radar Detector, Waze and ALP. Theyre illegal in Virginia but is a easy $50 "fix it" ticket. Im willing to pay that over dealing with a misdemeanor reckless.

Oh I assure you I don't live there, but I do pass through Virginia on occasion. There are speed traps literally everywhere there too.

Unless something has changed, operating Radar Detectors are illegal on military bases as well.
Believe it or not I was taken into custody by military MP's for having one on base in Japan in the 90s. We all knew to unplug them before we came on base - I forgot one day and the MP saw it when he pulled up behind me. Didnt help that I had taunted them out in town not long before by letting them see passengers in my car drinking while we rode around. He had me leave my car, took me into custody and my LT had to come get me out. I think he was more pissed about them wasting his time than me for forgetting to unplug the detector. |

JMO...Speed limits should be eliminate on freeways, the only reason they were imposed was during WWII I believe due to a shortage in fuel...Since there is no longer this issue with fuel we should have the privilege to drive like on the Autobahn...But most municipal area's use speeding/traffic citations as a form of revenue which is

Virginia information(radar, laser jammers, laws and tips) for those transiting or visiting specially during summer:
If you are driving thru the southeast Virginia DO NOT rely on Waze people in this area dont really use it. If youre in a big city like Richmond, DC, Charlottesville Waze is awesome. If you want to use Radar Detector: in Virginia make sure is a Escort Redline is invisible to radar detector detectors patrol cars are equipped with this equipment. Also buy a cheap"sacrifice/decoy radar detector" if you get caught the Officer can confiscate it for evidence and unless you want to hand over your $500 redline i suggest you buy a cheapo for $12 on amazon and hide the heavy artillery.... the ticket is a very cheap "fix it" fine with no points attached to it (this is both Jammers and Radar detectors). Much better than a reckless or speeding IMHO. Running radar detectors and Jammers in big cities in Virginia: In the southeast aka Hampton Roads LEOs are not looking for Radar detectors or Jammers but still hide them with a nice visor mount....LEOs usually blast their Radars and youll easily spot them a mile out with a good Radar detector. They use both K and Ka band but Ka seems to be their preferred. In other words if your radar detector starts screaming Ka band is definitely speed trap. K band alerts are the opposite. 90% of these alerts are caused by blind spot monitors and LEO technology takes advantage of this so K band is VERY tricky and dangerous, use caution. 50 mile radius from DC and Richmond LEOs are well trained to spot Jammers and Radar detectors. Is imperative you use a Redline radar detector and well concealed Jammer. Laws: Hitting 80 or 20 over will get you a weekend in jail and a misdemeanor(with no lawyer)if you lawyer up your chances are much better. Anything 30+ youre looking at 4-10 days depending on your record. Hitting triple digits well....good luck. TIP: Virginia has some areas where the limit is 70MPH if you hit 80mph eventhough is only 10 over it qualifies as a Reckless Driving(watch out for that). Of course thats where youll find the most speed traps. Holidays, weekends and early week mornings that's where I spot most speed traps. If youre in traffic or multi lane highways they will be using LIDAR therefore rendering your Radar detector useless. State Troopers specifically are very good at hiding and using excellent Radar/Laser tactics. Radar Jammers (VERY VERY different from Laser Jammers)... unless youre rocking military technology to jam radar then youre looking a Prison time. These are illegal everywhere. Military bases and this applies to ALL of them: Your Radar detector and laser jammer must be in an "OFF position" but as we know the guard most likely wont understand the rule, so avoid the argument and put it in your glovebox while on base and turn off the laser jammer even though they wont spot them. Can the Waze app sync with Android Auto? Or do you keep the phone on Bluetooth only and attached somewhere on the windshield?

The best system out there now is ALP, because it will protect against newer LIDAR guns. I have had the blinders on my other car, but switch to ALP because they send updates frequently and work against the newer, more powerful LIDAR guns.
