1LE spec wheels on a 2016 2SS?

I want to fatten up the rear tires/wheels on my 2016 2SS. I have heard there is a wire harness that is in the way on one side which prevents going with anything wider on the rear than 20/9.5" wheels and 275/35/20 tires. Does anyone have more information on this and what might be done to move the harness? Why does the 2016 LT1 (edit: 1LE) not have this problem, which came with 20/11" wheels and 305/30/20 tires?

You should be able to use 1LE sizes - Rear 11 inch wheels and 305/30/20 tires, front 10 inch wheels and 285/30/20.

There is a wiring harness in the driver's side rear wheel well that needs to be moved if you use anything larger than 305/30/20. Some people recommend moving it for the 305/30/20 also, but I found I did not need to - that may vary depending on the exact profile of the tire use (there is some variation between tires/brands for the same size).

I think you mean ZL1? There was no LT1 in 2016, and the current LT1's come with 245/40/20's on all four, which is the standard SS front size. Also, there was no 2016 ZL1, it came out in 2017. I believe the ZL1's can run the wider tires as that harness is installed differently from the factory.

I've been combing the wheel & tire threads for awhile and have deduced that you can run as much as 265/40 fronts and 295/35 rears on stock SS wheels (8.5 & 9.5) with no issues. For the rears, that will give you 1/2" taller and almost 7/8" wider. Not a huge gain but nearly an inch wider will certainly make it look like more of the wheelwell is filled.

I'm sure it's possible considering as hella flush is a thing and those people stretch tires dangerously far, but from my understanding it's not optimal according to all the tire size vs wheel size charts I've seen, for example this one. The stock SS rear wheels are 9.5" width and come with 275/35ZR20 tires, which falls exactly in line with the chart. If you want to run 295 width tires on the stock wheels you'll have to go up to a sidewall ratio of 50 or 55 to avoid excessive stretching, which probably means you're going to be rubbing. The SS 1LE rear wheels are 11" with 305/30R20 tires, which also lines up with that chart.

Someone here went up 20 and says no problem. A friend of mine with an ATS coupe went up 20 all the way around on his OEM wheels (on an AWD model) with no problem. He went with Conti DWS06's and they look fine, not "squeezed" at all. I bought a set of 2019+ SS split spokes for my 2016, cuz I didn't care for the 2016 versions I had, from a member here. They came with tires and whoever installed them (they weren't OEM) mistakenly put a 275 on a front wheel and a 245 on a rear wheel. I didn't even notice until I was looking at the rear that had the 245 and it looked stretched like you see on the imports with the super-wide wheels. That looked off, but the 275 on the front 8.5 looked fine, and in fact the guy that sold them to me never noticed and had been driving around on them. That was a 30-over setup. I think +20 will be fine, and not a rubbing issue at all. That seems to occur when folks put ZL1 wheels/tires on an SS, which is 30 over and a different wheel which may have a different offset. It's easy enough to move the harness if it rubs anyway.

On my long gone 2016 2SS I ran the stock size on the front and used 285/35s on the rear which made it have a slight rake from front to back.

Is there a way to relocate the harness? I wonder if there is a 1LE version of the harness in question?

1LE wheel and tire sizes will work out of the box, no fixes or relocation needed.

Anything wider or taller in the rear, wire harness relocation is recommended or required on your 2016, depending on exact details. Here is a how-to thread: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485975

You can change the very misleading thread title by editing your initial post in the advanced editor.

Arpad_m, thanks for the link to move the wire. Looks like it is best to then pull the liner closer to the wheel well. One guy uses Velcro. Clever.

I also changed the post title, thx!

For most people, there is no problem running the 1LE tire sizes on a base SS.

Sometimes people who track their cars and are running 1LE tire sizes will rub the liner because the tire can flex sideways on turns enough to contact the liner.

Running larger size tires than 1LE is where most people get in trouble.

It is very easy to move the harness out of the way. Just search the forum for what other people have done.

I moved my harness and used an existing hole in the body and a plastic push pin to push in and secure the hump in the wheel liner from touching so that I can put on a set of 1LE wheels.
